Brooks And Yearwood’s History
Brooks and Yearwood met back in 1987 during a demo-recording session. At the time, each of them were unsigned artists struggling to make it big in Nashville, Tennessee.
“We hit it off,” Yearwood later recalled. “But I had no idea he would turn out to be Garth Brooks!”
Brooks promised Yearwood that she could open his shows for him if he ever got a record deal. Sure enough, Brooks kept his word. For the next 13 years, Brooks and Yearwood were frequent collaborators and best friends. They often shared the stage with one another, and they even appeared on each other’s albums.
In 2001, Brooks divorced his first wife Sandy Mahl, who had been his high school sweetheart. He soon began dating Yearwood, and they married in 2005.
“All I can say is that I am so happy,” Yearwood said at the time. “What I’m feeling right now, I would wish on anyone.”
The rest, as they say, is history, and they’ve been together ever since!
“I think you got to treat it like a duet,” Brooks said of building a long-lasting marriage in a 2021 interview. “You got to harmonize, you got to make your partner feel like they’re a star. If not, you’re gonna turn into a solo act pretty damn quick, if you know what I mean.”
Brooks went on to say that Yearwood is somebody that he “always enjoyed being around.”
“We had a lot more in common than I ever dreamed we did,” he added.

Brooks Calls Yearwood ‘An Icon’
Last month, Brooks supported Yearwood as she received the Icon Award at the 2024 ACM Honors in Nashville.
“I was just so proud,” Brooks said at the time. “I’m always proud of her, but to see and hear her recognized like that — and to hear people use the word ‘icon’ in the same breath as her name – just took me someplace new.”
“She is an icon,” he continued. “I know what a world-class talent and force she is…and we all know what an incredible vocalist she is…but I love it when others really take notice, too.”
In the crazy entertainment world, it’s rare to find a marriage that is actually able to stand the test of time. That’s what makes Brooks and Yearwood’s marriage so inspiring.
Please join us in wishing Yearwood a very happy birthday, and many more to come!
