Jump into a fun rom-com for the night with Miranda Cosgrove and Pierson Fode with The Wrong Paris. The Netflix film is full of romance, awkward moments, and a slightly predictable ending. However, that doesn’t totally take away from the lighthearted film.

The Wrong Paris Review – Breaking Down Plot, Setting, Characters

Plot

The main plot centers around Dawn and her aspirations to go to Paris, France, and enroll in an art school there. However, due to her grandmother’s health bills, Dawn’s Paris fund is not enough for even one year at the prestigious school.

Her sister comes up with a solution: join the Honeypot show, and earn the $20,000 sign-on fee to help pay for schooling, especially with the shooting location in Paris.

The catch? It’s actually Paris, Texas, and the bachelor is a cowboy Dawn met a few weeks prior at a bar. Dawn tries to get eliminated quickly, but Trey and her heart have other plans.

I have never really delved into the whole “dating/love show” genre, so I wasn’t completely sure what to expect from The Wrong Paris and the Honeypot show. While some moments were a little cringy, I feel like most romance reality shows have hints of that throughout.

I think the plot was fun, especially when Dawn’s secret got out and she almost didn’t get to be with Trey. While you kind of knew they would be together somehow, it did add a nice obstacle to get in the way of their future.

I do wish there was a little more to the Honeypot show, such as more competitions or more drama, that could have made things more interesting.

Setting

The biggest plot twist had to do with the setting. Referencing the title of the film, the newest season of Honeypot was “supposed” to be in Paris, France.

In a surprising twist of events, the contestants were instead brought to Paris, Texas, a long way away from the Eiffel Tower.

While Dawn was infuriated, considering she lived about 60 miles away, the other contestants didn’t take long to enjoy Texas. This was especially true when they pulled up to a sprawling ranch where the show would take place.

I really enjoyed that we got to see both Paris, Texas, and Paris, France in the film. While the Eiffel Tower and the city of love are full of picturesque moments, I enjoyed the Texas scenery better. The sprawling landscapes, huge buildings, and decorations really set the stage for a cowboy romance. It also showed Dawn that there was more to Texas than she thought.

I don’t think I would change anything about the two main settings in the movie.

Characters

Ah, the characters, or should I say contestants, for the Honeypot. Just like normal romance reality shows, each girl had her own “gimmick” that fit into certain stereotypes – the small town girl, the influencer, the princess, etc.

I think each of these mirrored a true reality show well, and played into those fun stereotypes romance lovers enjoy seeing on the screen.

Plus, add in a hunky bachelor looking for love? And two producers squabbling in the background? You’ve got yourself a reality show.

I think the best performances were with Dawn and Trey, and Alexis trying to break them apart. Miranda Cosgrove and Pierson Fode had good chemistry throughout the entire film, which was an improvement from Cosgrove’s last rom-com, Mother of the Bride, on Netflix.

Dawn and Trey both had aspirations and dreams that split them apart, but they were able to make it work and have love win. Alexis, trying to get in between them, was funny, especially with her sneaking through Dawn’s bag and performing very provocatively on the mechanical bull.

All in all, the characters were fun, though not super emotionally deep.

The Wrong Paris Review: Final Thoughts

If you want a fun, lighthearted, rom-com that makes you feel fuzzy inside, try out The Wrong Paris. While I don’t normally lean towards rom-coms, this movie was full of laughs, cringes, and love. The settings and character dynamics sold the film, as I was invested in Dawn and Trey’s love story by the end.

While it is a cheesy rom-com, I could probably watch this film again.
