Ever since the news about The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023), fans have been excited to learn more about the sequels. There are so many spin-offs to choose from, including Luigi’s Haunted Mansion and Princess Peach: Showtime.

However, we finally have information on the next movie, and valuable details about it too. Here is everything we know about The Super Mario Galaxy Movie release date.

Although the news that Illumination and Nintendo shared a while ago, back in 2024 about the development of a sequel movie, the title wasn’t released until September 2025.

“We’re thinking about broadening Mario’s world further, and it’ll have a bright and fun story,” Nintendo and Illumination originally said in 2024.

The title was actually confirmed at the Nintendo Direct held on September 12, 2025, after initially being leaked online. The Direct also revealed the first teaser trailer, which doesn’t give much away, except the exciting return to the Mushroom Kingdom.

So what can we expect from the upcoming sequel to the Mario Movie franchise? What we do know is that The Super Mario Galaxy Movie release date is April 3, 2026, which is just under two years from the first movie’s release, which was April 5, 2023.

Along with the release date, we also have a confirmed cast list, which only shows the returning actors of the first movie. The list includes Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek. However, for other characters, like Rosalina, we’re still in the dark.

But what about the plot? While nothing is confirmed yet, we can take clues from the game to see what to expect. The game starts off with a Star Festival to watch a passing comet. However, the festival is ruined when Bowser attacks and once again kidnaps Princess Peach to his castle in outer space.

Mario ends up in space as well to rescue Princess Peach, where he meets Rosalina and the tiny star-like creatures, Luma. Mario sets off on a quest to collect Power Stars to repower the Comet Observatory, which is kind of like a spaceship, and save Peach.

But even with that synopsis, we might not get the same plot. “While the Super Mario Galaxy games are the core inspiration for our story, this next film holds surprises for fans of every Mario era,” said Illumination‘s Chris Meledandri.

He adds: “Our directors, Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, and our team of artists are busy working to deliver a film that aspires to earn its place in the history we’re here to celebrate. Brian Tyler is also returning to compose a score that incorporates themes from Mario’s incredible game heritage.”

While not much has been revealed to the fans, besides The Super Mario Galaxy Movie release date on April 3, 2026, we know that it’s going to be the same hilarious, intense, and exciting adventure as the first game.
