American police officers put their lives on the line to protect the rest of us every day, but unfortunately, they rarely get the respect they deserve in the United States. This week, a new bodycam video of a fatal officer-involved shooting in Tulsa, Oklahoma is going viral, and it serves as a reminder of just how dangerous being a police officer really is.

Fox23 reported that this incident took place on Monday, May 7 outside the Extended Stay Hotel, and the video begins thirty seconds after Tulsa Police Department Gang Unit Officers Chris Beyerl and Shawn Hickey stopped to speak with several men who were sitting in a parked car in the motel parking lot. Police were suspicious when they saw the men, as the area is known as a hub for drug trafficking and other criminal activity.

Officer Hickey began the exchange by approaching one of the men who was standing outside the car. The man tried to get away as soon as he saw police.

As Hickey talked to the man, Beyerl approached the vehicle and tried to talk to the front seat passenger, who refused to roll down the window. As he continued to not roll the window down, Beyerl saw that the man had a gun that was pointing right at him. Without hesitating, both officers opened fire on the man as he returned fire at them. Thankfully, he was not able to hit either officer.

The suspect who fired the gun has been identified as 26-year-old Albert Odom, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Odom had multiple previous drug-related convictions and four active warrants for his arrest at the time of the gunfight.

Two other people that were in the car fled the scene on foot. They were later apprehended and brought in for questioning, but they have since been released. Watch the altercation below:

The two officers have been placed on paid administrative leave while the local district attorney investigates the shooting. We’re glad to see that both officers are safe and sound and that they did what they had to do to keep their community safe!
