Start breaking out the Truffle Shuffle. After years of speculation and anticipation, The Goonies is finally getting a sequel.

A report by The Sun reveals that the project has been given the green light – nearly 40 years after the original cult classic.

“The Goonies reboot has been talked about for a long time but it’s finally been given the green light to go ahead,” a source told the outlet.

“The plan is to start developing the ideas for the follow-up next summer, with a possible release date of 2026 or 2027.”

The plot details remain under wraps, but the focus is on capturing the magic of the original while introducing the adventure to a new generation. Will today’s kids learn a new chapter in the tale of One-Eyed Willy, the legendary 17th-century pirate?

Who Is Going To Be In The Goonies Sequel?

Honestly, The Goonies was more than just a cult classic. It was pretty successful at the box office, coming in behind only Rambo: First Blood Part II in its opening weekend.

The film was among the top 10 highest-grossing films of 1985 and had a worldwide box office exceeding $120 million.

That might not sound like much by today’s blockbuster standards but remember, this was 1985 and the budget for the film was just $19 million.

The original film, directed by Richard Donner and based on a story by Steven Spielberg, followed a group of kids from the “Goon Docks” neighborhood of Astoria, Oregon, on a treasure hunt fueled by their motto, “Goonies never say die.”

The sequel to The Goonies will see the return of a significant portion of the original cast according to The Sun.

“It’s likely major stars will come back but the possibilities of where to take the sequel are endless,” their source explains.

The original cast includes Sean Astin as Mikey, Josh Brolin as Brand, Corey Feldman as Mouth, and Jeff Cohen as Chunk, among others.

Sadly, John Matuszak, the former football player and actor who played Sloth in the original film, passed away almost exactly four years after the release date.

Matuszak was a two-time Super Bowl champion and delivered perhaps the best-known line from the 1985 movie: “Hey you guys!”

How Exciting Is This?

The excitement for the sequel is palpable among fans, as seen on social media, where users have expressed both enthusiasm and skepticism about revisiting such a beloved classic.

There’s a mix of hope that the sequel will honor the original’s spirit. But also some concern over how it might adapt to contemporary cinema’s standards, including fears of it becoming overly “woked up and PC.”

Given the cultural significance of The Goonies, there’s considerable pressure on Warner Bros. to deliver a sequel that lives up to the legacy of the original, blending nostalgia with new updated adventures.

Can you even imagine kids putting down their phones long enough to go on a treasure hunt today?

“The original is so culturally significant, Warner Bros’ know they have to get it totally right,” the source tells The Sun.

“The team who are going to be starting work on the project are so excited. It is early days but the youth adventure market is on fire, so they want to capitalize on this,” they added. “The Goonies is 39 years old now and the idea that they can bring the magic of the film to a whole new audience has the team very excited.”

The bar has been set pretty high. Will the sequel live up to the hype?
