Mia Sara says that making Ferris Bueller’s Day Off was “not that good an experience for me.”

Didn’t Get Along

The 59-year-old star played Sloane Peterson, the girlfriend of Matthew Broderick’s character, in the 1986 teen comedy. She confessed that she didn’t get along with director John Hughes.

Sara told The Times newspaper, “I don’t really give interviews because making Ferris Bueller was not that good an experience for me. But I’m very aware of what a precious thing this movie is, and I don’t want to disappoint people. But I didn’t get along well with John.”

The Queenie star was just 17 when she was cast and thinks she lacked “emotional maturity” during production.

Sara said, “John was a strange guy. He wanted us all to hang out together and to introduce us to the French New Wave films. But the others were seasoned actors and I was a snotty New York kid and had seen all those movies, so he was frustrated in that desire. I didn’t have the emotional maturity to deal with other people’s egos, or my own.”

Massive Crush on Co-Star

However, Mia did reveal that she had a “massive crush” on her co-star Broderick, although it wasn’t reciprocated.

She said, “Yeah, I had no chance! I had a massive crush on Matthew during the filming, but it was very much unrequited.”

Meanwhile, Broderick claims that he has become “sort of used to” being defined by his part in the film.

The 64-year-old actor said, “This is hard to bring up without sounding like an egotistical maniac, but before the movie came out I felt like I’d been doing well, right?”

“And then afterwards I was being defined by this one role, which was strange. But I’m sort of used to it now.”

“Fake” Ferrari

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off features a memorable scene where the lead character steals his father’s 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California Spider, but star Alan Ruck has revealed that the vehicle was a “fake.”

The 69-year-old actor, who played Cameron Frye in the film, said, “That car was actually a fake made out of fiberglass. With a $5 million movie budget, we would never have been able to afford the insurance on a real one, even if we could have found one. So they built a replica and a lot of times it didn’t even start.”
