Touchdown! The newest NFL movie is officially in production. Titled Madden, the biopic will follow the story of the late football icon John Madden.
Oscar-nominated filmmaker David O. Russell will direct the film, which stars Nicolas Cage as Madden and Christian Bale as Raiders owner Al Davis.
Madden started as a player for the Philadelphia Eagles in 1958, before a knee injury sidelined him. Then, he jumped into the coaching world, leading the Oakland Raiders to their first Super Bowl victory seven years later. In 1979, Madden retired from coaching and became a beloved commentator before retiring in 2009.

Nicolas Cage and Christian Bale Transformed
Nicolas Cage and Christian Bale are the two leads for Madden, and a first look reveals them completely unrecognizable. Instead, the two have embodied the appearance of their characters, John Madden and Al Davis, respectively.
Cage dons shaggy hair while Bale has a cable-knit sweater as the two pose for the camera, showing off Super Bowl rings.
It’s incredible how much the two stars look like the NFL legends, almost as if they were transported back to the 70s.
What is the Madden Movie About?
According to a synopsis released by Amazon MGM Studios, the film will follow Madden “from his Super Bowl-winning partnership with fellow coach Al Davis and the Raiders, to creating Madden NFL, and becoming one of the most iconic voices in football history.”
In November 2024, Amazon released a four-part docuseries called It’s in the Game: Madden NFL, centering around the creation of the classic NFL game. You can watch the docuseries through Amazon Prime Video before the Madden movie premieres.

When Does the Madden Movie Come Out?
While there is no premiere date for the Madden movie yet, they have officially started production, with filming scheduled to end in July.
No trailer has been released for the biopic either, but if it looks anything like the photo with Cage and Bale, then we are in for a treat.
Other Supporting Cast
Aside from Cage and Bale, there are several other big names appearing in Madden. These include Kathryn Hahn as Madden’s wife, Virginia, John Mulaney as Electronic Arts founder Trip Hawkins, and Sienna Miller as Davis’ wife, Carol Davis.
