The Hollywood star Kevin Costner’s highly anticipated Western epic Horizon, An American Saga, which has been a labor of love for him in recent years, is finally set to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on Sunday.
Horizon To Debut At Cannes
Costner, 69, is speaking out to thank the Cannes Film Festival for letting him return to the Croisette after two decades away.
“I’ve been waiting for the right time to return and I’m proud to say that this time has come,” Costner told The Hollywood Reporter. “Horizon, An American Saga is a story that began 35 years ago, and I can’t think of a better place than Cannes to reveal to the world the result of such a wonderful adventure.”
Costner went on to explain why it’s particularly meaningful for him to have this movie debut in France.
“The French have always supported films and believed deeply in filmmaking,” he stated. “Just as I believe deeply in my film.”

Horizon Is Costner’s Passion Project
Costner both directed and starred in Horizon, which also stars Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Jena Malone, Abbey Lee, Michael Rooker, Danny Huston, Luke Wilson, Isabelle Fuhrman, Jeff Fahey, Will Patton, Tatanka Means, Owen Crow Shoe, Ella Hunt and Jamie Campbell Bower.
The film takes place over the course of four years of the Civil War, and it “explores the lure of the Old West and how it was won — and lost — through the blood, sweat and tears of many.”
Horizon is being broken up into two movies, with the first set to hit theaters on June 28 and the second scheduled to come out on August 16. Screenrant reported that Costner is planning to film two more Horizon movies, with the third film reportedly set to begin filming within the next month, before the first one is even released.
Costner has wanted to make Horizon for decades, initially envisioning it as a single standalone movie in 1988. By the time he was actually able to start making it in 2022, however, Horizon had expanded into an epic four-part saga.

Horizon Is A Gamble For Costner
This movie series is a massive gamble for Costner, as there is no guarantee that it will be either a critical or box office success. Reviews for the film will only come in after it debuts at Cannes on May 19, making this screening a crucial time for Costner. It’s also unclear how many fans will actually want to sit through a lengthy Western movie, as the runtime for Horizon Chapter 1 is listed at a whopping 181 minutes.
If anyone can pull this off, however, it’s Costner. His 1990 Western classic Dances With Wolves, which won the Oscar for Best Picture and Costner the Oscar for Best Director, is still beloved to this day. This means audience may be curious to see Costner make another movie in this genre again.
One thing is for sure, and that is that Costner has to be sweating bullets going into this weekend’s screening at Cannes. Please join us in saying a prayer that it goes well for him!
