What is Anaconda About?
Although it shares the same name as the 1997 thriller, the 2025 movie is not a remake of the original.
The new film centers on a group of friends navigating midlife crises. They decide to remake their favorite movie from their youth, Anaconda. “We’re gonna shoot it indie style, one and done,” Rudd says of the remake in the Anaconda trailer.
Heading deep into the Amazon jungle to film, things get horrifyingly real when an actual giant anaconda appears, turning their chaotic movie into a fight for survival. The movie they wanted to make since they were kids? It might just get them killed.
Project Confirmed by Black and Rudd
In 2024, Rudd and Black confirmed the film and announced its release date in a promotional video on YouTube. “We’re making a movie!” Black said at the start of the video, which switched to, “Paul Rudd and Jack Black star in the ‘Anaconda.'”
According to Rudd, audiences will filter through several emotions while watching the film. “You want to get scared,” he commented in the video.
“You want to laugh…. to celebrate with your friends. Maybe you’re alone, sad, and don’t have nobody but just want to forget about that. It’s coming out on Christmas in 2025.”
Cast Members

Jack Black and Paul Rudd aren’t the only ones starring in the film. Thandiwe Newton, Steve Zahn, Daniela Melchior, and Selton Mello join them on screen.

Success of the 1997 Anaconda
The original 1997 Anaconda film starred Jennifer Lopez, Jon Voight, Owen Wilson, and Ice Cube. The plot follows a National Geographic-esque film crew. An insane hunter takes them hostage and forces them to join his quest to capture the world’s largest and deadliest snake, the anaconda.
The movie grossed $65.9 million domestically after a $16.6 million opening. It went on to earn $136.9 million worldwide, becoming an early box office win for Lopez and Cube.
