moscow mall fire

At least 14 people were injured and four more trapped in a massive fire that broke out at the “Rio” shopping mall in Moscow on Monday. Over 180 firefighters responded to the scene.

14 people required medical assistance due to the fire at the Rio mall, with ten of them being hospitalized, Sergey Gumenyuk, Deputy Director of the Research and Practical Center for Emergency Medical Care, told RIA-Novosti.

According to Gumenyuk, the majority of those hospitalized were diagnosed with “poisoning by combustion gasses.”

Videos posted to social media show the chaos inside the mall as the fire broke out:

A source told RT that “the smoke exhaust system might have malfunctioned in the building.”

The fire itself covers about 1,000 sq. meters, according to the Emergencies Ministry press service. The blaze has been assigned a “difficulty rank” of 4, the second-worst under Russian standards.
