Track and field is an individual sport as well as a team event. You train with your team all year as you try to win as many medals as you can for your organization.
Despite the team aspect of track and field, there are some events that are solo, and your individual ability is all that matters.
American Molly Huddle was competing in an individual race, and as she approached the finish line, she thought she was comfortably in third place. She couldn’t catch the first two women in front of her and expected to easily win a bronze medal.
There was nobody around her and she didn’t hear any excess breathing behind her…..until it was too late.
Molly’s teammate Emily Infeld didn’t get the memo about giving up and settling for fourth place. She ran her little heart out and gave it a last second push to take the bronze from her teammate.
Molly was crushed. She thought she was going to win a medal and before she knew it, the race was over and her medal chances were gone.
What does this teach us? We have to run the race as hard as we can if we expect to see the results we were hoping to achieve. If Molly would have pushed at the end, she would have won the medal. Unfortunately for Molly, she gave up and her teammate was victorious.
You should remember to speed up to reach your goals and don’t ever quit. Even if you see the finish line ahead, the race isn’t over until you cross it.
