A 14-year-old, knife-wielding teen in Reno, Nevada, was critically injured by a campus police officer after he refused to put down the knives he was holding.

The teen reportedly got into an altercation with another classmate then began threatening others with the knives.

The entire event was captured on camera.

Washoe County Schools Superintendent Traci Davis thanked the officers, “Had it not been for their quick actions and professionalism, I truly believe that the outcome could have been much worse for our students.”

A friend of the student who was shot by police claimed the boy was attempting to defend a friend who had been hit.

The father of the injured student, Dermick Laflamme questioned the use of lethal force, “I think the police are way out of line for having lethal rounds at school.”

He also claims his son was defending himself, “So he obviously wasn’t swinging around knives for no reason. He was obviously defending himself.”

Schools police chief Jason Trevino reports that the shooting is under investigation by the Reno Police Department and warned against drawing conclusions from videos that only capture a portion of the incident.

Reno Police Officer Tim Broadway notes there were over 40 students who witnessed the shooting and many took cellphone video. “There’s multiple videos out there.” He continued, “There’s some very disturbing video out there. But there are other events that led up to this incident, so please don’t react to those.”

What do you think? Was the boy defending himself? Was the police officer right to take him down?
