In many sects of Christianity, the decision to be baptized is an extremely personal declaration of faith that people come to at all stages of life. But while young Ethan might have been ready to give his heart and soul to Jesus, he wasn’t quite as ready to be dunked underneath the water.
While each denomination has its own baptism ritual, many Protestant denominations – most notably the Baptist denomination – require full-body immersion to represent the believer’s death to sin and resurrection in Jesus Christ. But when Pastor Bobby tried to guide Ethan’s head backward underwater, the young boy’s nerves took over.
Thankfully, Pastor Bobby wasn’t about to let fear stop Ethan from being born again in Christ. Watch the hilarious video below.
Can you really blame Ethan? Allowing someone to dunk you backward underwater is not a natural thing to do. But the hilarious, heartwarming moment also served as a testament to Ethan to have faith, for there’s nothing to fear in the presence of God.
Baptism has been a part of Christianity from its earliest days, beginning with John the Baptist, who famously baptized Jesus and used baptism as the central sacrament of his messianic movement. Scholars believe that the earliest Christian baptisms were likely done by immersion, though, affusion, a method of baptism where water is poured over the head, became the norm in the West between the twelfth and fourteenth centuries. However, Baptists declared in the 1689 Baptist Confession of Faith that, “Baptism is rightly administered by immersion, or dipping the whole body of the person in water, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”
Of course, Pastor Bobby made sure to sprinkle some water over Ethan’s head after his immersion, just to be sure.
