Last month, we reported that the former Tonight Show host Jay Leno’s beloved wife Mavis, who he’s been married to for 44 years, no longer recognizes him at times amidst a battle with dementia. On Tuesday, Jay and Mavis reemerged to walk the red carpet together at the Los Angeles premiere of Jerry Seinfeld’s new Netflix comedy Unfrosted.

“I feel great,” Mavis, 77, told Entertainment Tonight, with Jay, 74, adding, “Thought I’d come to something fun for a change. Everything is so controversial. Just to come to a funny, silly movie – it’s great. I think people will have a great time.”
“[Mavis and I] hang out every day,” he continued. “We have a great time. 44 years [married], so we’re doing good.”

Mavis’ Dementia Battle – Jay Stays Positive
This comes months after Mavis’ dementia diagnosis was revealed to the world when Jay filed for a conservatorship of their joint estate back in January. At the time, he asked a judge in Los Angeles to grant him this request so that he could “structure her living trust and other estate plans” in the event that he should die before her.
“Mavis has been progressively losing capacity and orientation to space and time for several years,” one court filing read. “Jay is fully capable of continuing support for Mavis’ physical and financial needs, as he has throughout their marriage,” but her “current condition renders her incapable of executing the estate plan.”

Mavis’ neurologist Dr. Hart Cohen revealed that she “sometimes does not know her husband Jay, nor her date of birth.”
“She has a lot of disorientation, will ruminate about her parents who have both passed and her mother who died about 20 years ago,” read other court documents obtained by Fox News.
Dr. Cohen made a point of saying that Jay “loves his wife very much” and “treats [Mavis] like gold,” adding that he waited to bring about a conservatorship of the estate “out of respect to her.”
Despite Mavis’ diagnosis, Jay has stayed positive, telling reporters back in January that his wife is “fine, everybody’s good, we’re doing well. I just set up a will, in case something happens.”

While this is clearly a very difficult time for both Jay and Mavis, it’s nice to see that they were able to enjoy a date night together. This serves as a reminder that dementia is a fickle disease that progresses differently for everyone, and oftentimes no two cases of it end up looking the same.
