Family Man Ryan Gosling Picks Roles That Won’t Hurt His Children

The Hollywood star Ryan Gosling is speaking out this week to say that he keeps his “family in mind first” when he chooses his movie roles.

Gosling Talks Parenting

Gosling, 43, and his partner Eva Mendes, 50, who he’s been with since 2011, share daughters  Esmeralda, 9, and Amada, 8. In a new interview with The Wall Street Journal, Gosling opened up about how becoming a father has changed both his career and his life.

“I don’t really take roles that are going to put me in some kind of dark place,” he said, according to Fox News. “This moment is what I feel like trying to read the room at home and feel like what is going to be best for all of us. The decisions I make, I make them with Eva, and we make them with our family in mind first.”

When asked about when his children could start to enjoy the movie making process, Gosling brought up his 2016 film La La Land.

“I think La La Land was the first,” he recalled. “It was just sort of like, Oh, this will be fun for them, too, because even though they’re not coming to set, we’re practicing piano every day, or we’re dancing, or we’re singing.”

Life Changes When You Have Children

Gosling went on to explain that once you have children, “you start to be way more conscious of everything you do and everything you’ve ever done,” as well as things you might do in the future. An example of this is since becoming a father, Gosling has started to think twice about doing any kind of stunt work for his films.

Gosling chose to do the 2023 movie Barbie, which saw him earn his third Oscar nomination for playing Ken, partly because his two daughters are such big fans of the iconic doll.

“Their interest in Barbie and their disinterest in Ken was an inspiration,” he said. “I thought, they were already making little movies about their Barbies on the iPad when it happened, so the fact that I was going off to work to make one too, we just felt like we were aligned.”

As for how he is trying to raise his girls, Gosling explained that he is “just trying to figure out who they are,” adding that their “distinct personalities” are already “sort of becoming obvious.”

Gosling Moves Daughters Out Of L.A.

Gosling feels that one of the best parenting decisions that he has made is moving his daughters out of Los Angeles.

“For them, the most important job is their girls. Everything else comes second,” a source close to Gosling and Mendes said. “And their girls are thriving. They left L.A. to live a bit further north, away from Hollywood. They didn’t want the girls to grow up around other celebrity kids.”

It’s rare to find a true family man in the crazy world of Hollywood these days, so Gosling’s philosophy on life is quite refreshing to witness. If only there were more stars in Hollywood like him!
