Back in December, we reported that the former Home Improvement star Zachery Ty Bryan had been arrested for the sixth time in five years. We later reported that he was facing major prison time after he admitted to violating his probation.
Now, Bryan has learned his fate and been sentenced by a judge.
Bryan Learns His Fate
Bryan, 44, was sentenced to 16 months in jail on Monday. This sentence is related to a previous February of 2024 arrest on DUI charges in La Quinta, California. Afterwards, Bryan was charged with felony DUI and a misdemeanor for alleged contempt of court.
Court records obtained by People Magazine show that Bryan was rearraigned yesterday on February 23. After pleading guilty to the DUI charge, Bryan struck a deal with prosecutors. The deal also saw the former child star admit to an enhancement related to having two prior DUI convictions,
A judge ultimately sentenced Bryan to 16 months in the county jail after denying him probation. He already has 57 days of jail credit, meaning he will spend the next 14 months behind bars.
Unfortunately for Bryan, this isn’t the end for him when it comes to his legal issues. On March 2, Bryan is scheduled to appear in court in Lane County, Oregon for his probation violation that we previously reported on. That violation was in connection to a domestic violence conviction from July of 2023.
In that incident, Bryan was arrested by the Eugene Police Department following a report of a physical dispute. He was subsequently booked into the Lane County Jail on Assault in the Fourth Degree APA (Abuse Prevention Act), third-degree robbery, and misdemeanor harassment charges.
In October of 2023, Bryan plead guilty to “felony assault in the fourth degree constituting domestic violence.” He ultimately spent seven days in jail.
Bryan Violates His Probation
Fast forward to November 29, 2025, when Bryan violated his probation from a prior domestic violence charge in Oregon. Both he and his fiancée Johnnie Faye Cartwright, 32, were arrested on that day.
“On November 29th at about 12:30 p.m., Lane County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of reckless endangering in the area of Big Fall Creek Road milepost 5, a popular camping area northeast of Lowell,” the Lane County Police Department said in a statement posted to Facebook. “Deputies learned Zachery Ty Bryan, 44, of Eugene, was in a pickup truck with Johnnie Faye Cartwright, 32, of Eugene, and their three small children.”
“They were driving together in the area,” the arresting agency continued. “At some point Bryan got out of the pickup truck and began walking on Big Fall Creek Road. Cartwright then attempted to run over Bryan, crashing the truck with the children inside into the ditch. Bryan was able to move out of the way and avoid injury. No one inside the pickup was injured.”
The Situation Escalates
Sadly, things only got worse from there.
“Deputies interviewed Bryan and Cartwright, deputies observed signs both were impaired. Deputies also interviewed witnesses contacted on scene,” the statement added. “Per a court order from a prior case, Bryan was not supposed to be in contact with Cartwright.”
“After additional investigation, Cartwright was arrested for Attempted Assault in the 1st Degree, three counts of Recklessly Endangering, and DUII,” the statement concluded. “Bryan was arrested for a probation violation on an original charge of Assault in the 4th Degree. The involved children were placed with a family member.”
During his December 3 arraignment, Bryan denied violating his probation. Despite this, he was denied bail and was placed at Lane County Community Corrections. Court records show that he was released on December 10.
On December 29, Bryan admitted to three probation violations. His probation officer then recommended that he serve the entirety of the 19-to-20-month sentence that he was originally facing for the 2023 domestic violence conviction.
Bryan’s History
This has been quite a fall from grace for Bryan. He originally rose to fame as a child actor starring alongside Tim Allen and Patricia Richardson on Home Improvement. He played their oldest son Brad Taylor on the series from 1991 until 1999.
Just a few weeks before his latest arrest, Bryan gave an interview in which he blamed his latest previous domestic violence arrest on the tough transition from childhood fame to adulthood. He claimed that “fame as a child actor left scars” in his life that led to his legal troubles.
“Being thrust into the spotlight at nine-years-old brought pressures I wasn’t equipped to handle,” Bryan later added. “But that’s no justification for my choices as an adult.”
It’s sad to see a former child star who brought joy to millions on Home Improvement go down this route. Bryan will serve at least the next 14 months in jail. On March 2, he’ll learn his fate on his other charges. In the end, it’s not looking good for Bryan, and it seems that he’s looking at spending some major time behind bars.
