Whoopi Goldberg spoke out this week to reveal the surprising person who would be her dream guest co-host on her ABC talk show The View.
Goldberg’s Dream Guest Co-Host
Goldberg was asked who her dream guest co-host would be on The View while she appeared at the Disney Upfronts on Tuesday.
“I’d like to have Pope Leo asking people questions,” Goldberg, 70, told Us Weekly. “As an American Pope, it would be great to sit with him, and it’d be great for him to sit with us.”
Goldberg and her c0-hosts on The View have frequently discussed Pope Leo since he was elected as the head of the Catholic church in May of 2025. Last month, Goldberg defended Pope Leo after he was slammed by President Donald Trump, partly for expressing his hope for peace amidst the Iran war.
“That’s what the Pope’s job is. That’s his job, to help us to recognize what His beliefs are,” Goldberg said on The View. “As an American — he is the first American Pope — he has every right [to speak out]. Remember what free speech is and that we all have it. It’s not just for you.”
Goldberg Meets Pope Francis
Goldberg does not identify as Catholic. Despite this, she met Pope Francis at the Vatican back in October of 2023. During their meeting, she even offered him a cameo in Sister Act 3. Indeed, Goldberg described meeting the Pope as being “the most exquisite experience.”
“So, yeah, remember I said I was here and we’re looking at all these different things? I think I forgot to mention, I met the Pope today,” Goldberg wrote on her Instagram Story at the time. “It was pretty remarkable.”
“He says we have to love everybody,” she continued. “We can all talk about it, and that can sometimes be the best weapon with which to fight injustice.”
Goldberg went on to talk about the pope’s potential cameo in Sister Act 3.
“Picture Sister Act and all the nuns standing here, waiting for the Pope to come out.” Goldberg wrtote. “Maybe that’s going to happen in the new movie. You don’t know. You never know, but we are in Rome, and I am in Vatican City. What could I be doing? Why could I be here? We’ll find out.”
After Pope Francis died in April of 2025. Goldberg took to Instagram to pay tribute to him.
“He was the closest in a long time that seemed to remember that Christ’s love enveloped believer and none believer,” Goldberg wrote. “He felt more like Pope John the 23rd who made belief real. Sail on Pope Frances with your love of humanity & Laughter.”
The View’s Longevity
The View has been on television for 29 years, and Goldberg has been the moderator on the talk show since 2007. While appearing at the Disney Upfronts this week, Goldberg was asked what the secret is behind the longevity of The View.
“You know what? It’s really simple,” she replied. “It’s never personal, and you just say what you think. That’s what they pay me for, and that’s what I do, so it makes it easy.”
Given how busy Pope Leo is, it’s unlikely that he’ll be appearing on The View anytime soon. If he ever does want to appear on an American talk show, we can think of plenty others that would be far better fits for him than a ridiculous program like The View.
Nice try, Whoopi, but we doubt that this wish of yours will be coming true anytime soon. Good riddance!
