Whoopi Goldberg returned to The View on Monday after a merciful two-week absence. As soon as she kicked off the show, Goldberg explained where she had been to viewers. Indeed, the explanation behind her absence undoubtedly came as a shock to many of them.
Goldberg Misses Two Weeks On The View
It turns out that Goldberg, 70, missed two weeks on The View to film a guest starring role on the popular Italian soap opera Un Posto Al Sole.
“We should say ‘bienvenuto,’” began Goldberg’s co-host Ana Navarro, “’cause I think this [expletive] has forgotten to speak English.”
“I don’t know what language I’m thinking in,” Goldberg replied with a laugh. “What time zone I’m in?”
Wasn’t that true BEFORE you left for Italy, Whoopi?!
Getting serious, Goldberg told her co-hosts that her time in Europe “was really good.”
“I learned a lot because I’d never done a soap opera before,” she admitted. “And so doing a soap opera in a different language, in a different country, made for a really interesting time. It was great.”
However, Goldberg made sure to make it clear to her co-hosts that she wasn’t on vacation by sending them plenty of videos from her time on the soap opera’s set.
“I just wanted y’all to know I was actually working,” Goldberg explained.
Though she was in Naples, a city internationally known for its beauty, Goldberg wasn’t a fan of it.
“It rained every day,” she whined. “And I don’t mean like, ‘Oh, it’s raining, how beautiful.’ It was like, ‘rain, rain, storm, thunder.’ It was crazy.”
Being in one of the best places in the world and still finding ways to complain about it? Sounds pretty on brand for Whoopi Goldberg!
Check out one of Goldberg’s updates from her time in Italy in the video below.
Goldberg’s Soap Opera Appearance
Un Posto Al Sole has been one of Italy’s most popular soap operas ever since it premiered back in 1996. It centers around residents living at the Palazzo Palladini apartment building.
Goldberg shocked her fans back in June by revealing that she would be guest starring on this soap opera.
“I just wanted to stop in and say how happy I am to be joining the cast of Un Posto Al Sole,” Goldberg said at the time in a video posted to Instagram. “They know it’s a crazy idea. I know it’s a crazy idea. But, what a wonderful thing to do. I’m looking forward to it and I’m excited.”
“No, my Italian is not perfect, but we’ve worked it out,” she added. “Ciao! See you on TV.”
Goldberg ‘Looking For Things To Do’
Goldberg further discussed her role on the soap opera while appearing on the Behind the Table podcast last month. She revealed that it came to her when she was “looking for things to do.”
“I only know soap operas here,” she confessed. “I love a soap opera. I love it. I don’t know how they work there. I don’t know if they do four lines from here, three lines from there. I don’t know how it works. But it will all be new.”
“I wish I could take y’all with me,” she added of her The View co-hosts. “I might be able to shoot something on my cell… It’s time. It’s time for me to do some things in addition to this.”
In the end, we’re just grateful that we all got a few weeks off from Goldberg spewing her nonsense on The View. If only Goldberg had liked Italy just a little bit better, because there are millions of Americans who would have loved it if she’d stayed there!
