Whoopi Goldberg was humiliated on her own show The View on Tuesday. This happened when a former co-star called her out on live television for “messing up” a movie scene years ago.

Goldberg Called Out On Live TV

Goldberg, 69, and Niecy Nash, 55, appeared together in the 1995 movie Boys on the Side. Though Nash has gone on to become an Emmy-winning actress, she has never forgotten this role, as it was her big screen debut.

On Tuesday, Nash went on The View to promote her new Hulu drama All’s Fair, which she stars in with Kim Kardashian and Glenn Close. During her appearance on the ABC talk show, Nash took the opportunity to let co-host Goldberg have it for how she behaved on their film set thirty years ago.

“I played ‘Woman in the Diner.’ My scene was with this beautiful woman right here,” Nash said of Goldberg. “I almost got fired because she kept laughing and messing up the scene. And I yelled, ‘Cut!’ You’re not supposed to do that.”

“I yelled cut and I said, ‘Hey, she’s messing up the scene!’ And Whoopi said, ‘No you didn’t!'” Nash recalled.

Nash, who was just 25 years-old at the time, went on to remember that she told Goldberg, “Girl, they’re not going to fire you!”

From there, the situation only got more desperate for Nash.

“I needed them to know I didn’t do it,” she continued. “Hey, she’s messing it up! But I have loved you ever since.”

Goldberg Responds

Goldberg finally chimed in to say, “But tell them why, because it was a line that no human being would say.”

Nash explained that the movie’s director Herbert Ross asked her what the issue with the line was. She responded by telling him that “people don’t talk like that” in the real world.

“He said, ‘Well, what would you like to say?'” she added. “And I said, ‘Girl, is that your friend in the bathroom? You better get in there because she’s throwing up!’ And Whoopi said, ‘You go, girl!'”

Neither Nash nor Goldberg could remember what the original line was. However, Nash knew that “it was terrible, whatever the first line was.”

Goldberg closed off the segment by saying that “it made no sense, and she fixed it” for the final cut. She admitted that the scene was all the better for it in the end.

Nash Overcomes This To Achieve Success

Boys on the Side also stars Drew Barrymore and Matthew McConaughey. The film follows a group of women on a cross-country road trip.

In a 2016 interview, Nash revealed that when she was cast in this movie, she didn’t even have an agent. She told People Magazine that she told the Boys on the Side casting director, “I’m broke. I have a baby. I need a job.”

No wonder Nash was so quick to admonish Goldberg when she nearly ruined her one scene!

Thankfully, Nash was able to overcome this in order to launch a successful acting career. Her big break came when she starred in the comedic television series Reno 911!, which premiered in 2003. Nash later won her first Emmy in 2023 for Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story

“I knew that the call on my life was to entertain,” Nash said last year. “I get up every morning and I live in gratitude that I get to do it every day, I really do.”

As for Goldberg, she’s largely left the acting world to instead focus on moderating The View, a show that she’s been doing since 2007. There, Goldberg rants about her radically liberal views on a daily basis, much to the dismay of millions of level-headed Americans.

While Goldberg seems like a nightmare to work with, many of us would rather she leave The View and return to acting. In the end, Goldberg is easier to stomach when she’s pretending to be someone else instead of being herself!
