Whoopi Goldberg has announced that she will be auctioning off some of the “many treasures” that she’s garnered over the years.
Goldberg To Auction Off ‘Treasures’
Goldberg, 70, is teaming up with with Julien’s Auctions for “Whoopi Goldberg: The Collection.” In launching this project, Goldberg will be auctioning off jewelry, costumes, dresses, personal memorabilia and more.
The live and online auction will take place over two days. It will begin on March 10 and conclude on March 11 at 1 p.m. ET.
“Over seven decades of a life well lived and more than 40 years of a fabulous career, it’s time to part with some of the many treasures that are filling more storage units than one person should have,” Goldberg told WWD.
“I’m honored to partner with the iconic Julien’s Auction to find new homes for these special pieces, which I hope can now bring someone else as much joy as they have brought to me,” she continued. “I am equally thrilled that two such wonderful organizations, One Simple Wish and DonorsChoose, will benefit from this special auction.”
Indeed, a portion of the proceeds from this auction will be going to these nonprofit organizations. Find out more about it in the video below.
What’s Being Auctioned Off
Some of the items being auctioned off include Goldberg’s 2008 Tony Awards dress. It was a custom design by Christian Siriano estimated between $1,000 and $2,000. Goldberg is also auctioning the 1999 Bob Mackie-designed costume that she wore when she hosted the 1999 Oscars, which is also estimated between $1,000 and $2,000. Another item is a blazer that Goldberg wore for Sister Act 2, estimated between $800 to $1,200.
“It is a true honor for Julien’s Auctions to collaborate with the legendary Whoopi Goldberg, one of the few entertainers to achieve prestigious EGOT status,” said Martin Nolan, cofounder and executive director of Julien’s Auctions.
“This collection is a direct reflection of her meticulous eye for detail and lifelong devotion to artistry, serving as a testament to the unparalleled cultural legacy she has built over the decades,” he added. “These items represent more than just a curated selection; they are touchstones of a groundbreaking career, offering collections a rare and personal connection to the moments that have shaped entertainment history.”
Goldberg’s Past Financial Comments
Goldberg has an estimated net worth of $20 million. An insider told The Sun in 2022 that Goldberg makes $8 million a year hosting her ABC talk show The View. That’s why it’s somewhat surprising that Goldberg would feel the need to auction off her personal items.
Back in 2024, Goldberg shocked viewers when she claimed that she’s only on The View because she needs the money.
“I appreciate that people are having a hard time,” she said. “Me, too. I work for a living. If I had all the money in the world, I would not be here, OK? So, I’m a working person, you know?”
Goldberg doubled down on this in September of last year when she claimed that she “can’t afford” to retire.
Ahead of her 70th birthday, Goldberg was asked by Entertainment Tonight if she’s considering “slowing down” at all.
“Who can afford to do that?” an incredulous Goldberg fired back.
“If you don’t marry well, you gotta keep working,” Goldberg shockingly went on to claim.
The reporter, who was seemingly stunned by the Sister Act star’s response, pointed out that Goldberg “could probably afford” to retire. However, she wasn’t having any of it. Instead, Goldberg responded, “No, not by now. Not yet.”
“I gotta keep paying those bills, baby,” she concluded.
Goldberg’s decision to auction off some of her “many treasures” may indicate that she’s having some kind of financial troubles. However, it could also just mean that she wants to offload some stuff.
It’ll certainly be interesting to see how this auction turns out for Goldberg!
