In the crazy world of Hollywood, it’s rare to find a marriage that actually stands the test of time. That’s what makes the 38-year marriage between Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson so special.

In a new interview, Wilson is revealing the surprising “secret” behind her decades-long marriage to Hanks.

Wilson’s ‘Secret’ To Her 38-Year Marriage With Hanks

According to Wilson, the secret to keeping her marriage strong has always been a shared bathroom!

“That’s where you download everything,” Wilson, 69, told People Magazine. “That’s where you download the day. You laugh about what you’re doing. In the mornings, you’re thinking about, ‘What are you doing today? Where are you going to be? Great, I want you there.'”

Wilson went on to admit that while it’s funny, it’s also “very true.” She added that she and Hanks, 69, have “shared values.”

“You have to be able to communicate to each other the things that are changing in your life,” Wilson explained. “And also the things that are still staying the same so that you’re always working together for the greater good.”

Wilson then joked that her 38-year marriage is “110 dog years” in Hollywood, where divorce is incredibly common among celebrities. As for Wilson and Hanks, however, their relationship is seemingly as solid as ever.

“You never go to bed mad,” Wilson advised. “I heard that early, early on, and I thought, ‘That’s actually really good.’ You don’t want to wake up in the morning and have that lingering feeling. So whatever it is, resolve it before you go to bed.”

Wilson and Hanks met on the set of the ABC sitcom Bosom Buddies in 1981. At the time, Hanks was still married to his first wife Samantha Lewes, so sparks didn’t fly immediately.

Wilson and Hanks reconnected years later. They announced that they were dating in 1986, and they married in 1988. They share sons Chet, 35, and Truman, 30, both of whom are actors. Wilson is also stepmom to Hanks older children, actor Colin, 48, and writer E.A., 43, from his previous marriage.

Wilson’s New Song ‘Marriage’

Wilson just released her new album Sound of a Woman last week on May 1. Her romance with Hanks is referenced on the album in the country song “Marriage.”

“One minute you’re in love with him, the next you wish he’d die / Sometimes leaving would be easier than staying,” Wilson sang. The song is really about the level of commitment that it takes for a long-lasting relationship to continue working.

“You’re not the same person you were when you got married,” Wilson stated. “Who you are physically, who you are emotionally, spiritually is very different than who you are 10 years later, 20 years later, 30 years later.”

In the end, Wilson wants people to know that if they want a healthy marriage, they must have “the ability to grow, change and evolve together and support each other” over time.

“I still look at my husband, and I still see him the way we were when we were 20,” Wilson concluded. “But at the same time, I know that we’re not, and I’m so grateful for that huge chunk of time that we’ve had together.”

After watching so many stars get bitter divorces, it’s heartwarming to see a Hollywood marriage that is actually able to stand the test of time. We’d like to wish Wilson and Hanks many years of happiness together to come!
