Tom Hanks’ son Chet is currently starring on the MTV reality television show Surreal Life: Villa Of Secrets, which premiered on Tuesday night. You may remember Chet from the now-famous “White Boy Summer.”
During the episode, Chet was quick to whine about about the downsides of having such a famous father, the poor guy!
Chet Whines About Having A Famous Dad
“My dad’s Tom Hanks. Have people brought that up my entire life? Yes. Is it annoying? Nah,” Chet, 33, told the camera sarcastically.
“Some people are really enamored with my family’s fame. Some people are really resentful about it,” he later added. “From a young age, being very aware of that, was a lot to mentally process.”
Chet is a rapper and actor who is the oldest of two sons born to Tom, 68, and his wife Rita Wilson, 67. Tom also has two older children from a previous marriage.
Chet has been open about suffering from drug and alcohol addiction in the past. He’s long been seen as being a stark contrast to his father’s “good guy” persona, which has clearly weighed on him.
“I’ll tell you something about my childhood,” he told two of his castmates. “People think that being Tom Hanks’ son, like, I would grow up feeling like I was the […]. I actually grew up feeling completely […] worthless.”
“People treated me like, ‘You must think you’re better than me’ when I didn’t,” he continued. “I just wanted to be friends with everybody and just be treated normally like everybody else.”

‘What Am I Supposed To Do?’
Chet went on to say that he found all of this to be very difficult to deal with.
“But what am I supposed to do?” he lamented. “Walk through the doors and be all meek and timid? That was a mind [expletive] for me to deal with. ‘Cause then if you do walk in through the door and you’re like, ‘Here I am, [expletive],’ it’s like, ‘Oh look at you, arrogant son of a [expletive].’”
“So I did internalize all that negativity,” he concluded. “I’d be like ‘Wow, maybe I am [expletive] worthless,’ you know what I’m saying? So it was a battle for me mentally and emotionally, just to be able to walk outside, look someone in the eye, say, ’What’s up? I’m Chet.'”
Despite all of these complaints, Chet indicated that he is close to his family at other points in the episode. He even had words of praise for his famous Oscar-winning dad.
“My dad’s like the most humble dude and he’s so low-key,” he explained to one castmate. “Like he drives a Prius, you know what I mean? He doesn’t like anything flashy.”

Chet’s Parents Initially Banned Him From Doing Reality TV
This came after Chet revealed to the world that his parents had initially banned him from ever going on reality TV. However, they made an exception when this offer from MTV came his way.
“They definitely have said [no reality TV] in regard to the typical reality shows,” Chet told Daily Mail, referring to his famous parents.
“When this came up, we discussed it and everybody agreed… we all agreed that this could be a really great opportunity for me and it was perfect,” he added. “They were really supportive. I was excited and everybody was.”
