Tim Allen and Nancy Travis starred as the married couple Mike and Vanessa Baxter on the hilarious sitcom Last Man Standing from 2011 until 2021.
The show was so popular, it led to another hit sitcom for Allen… but people are still in love with Last Man Standing. So much so, that people are dying to know where their characters would be today. In a new interview, Nancy Travis breaks down what she think would have happened.
Travis Reveals Where Mike And Vanessa Are Now
“When we would film a scene on Last Man Standing, one would be as written and then we would joke around about what would be the most extreme version of this scene,” Travis, 63, told US Weekly. “We would call that version ‘when the door slams shut.’”
Travis went on to explain that she and Allen, 71, always believed that there were two versions of Mike and Vanessa’s story.
“If this show was on network TV, it would probably be Vanessa and Mike in rocking chairs bickering,” she said with a laugh. “But who knows what it would be when the door slams shut if they were on cable?”
It’s a good question. Tim Allen is known for his family-friendly comedy – but he’s no prude. What would those two have gotten up to on cable?
Allen And Travis Reunite
Last week, Travis reunited with Allen on his new sitcom Shifting Gears. Travis guest starred as Charlotte, a woman who has been a widow for five years. She ends up meeting Allen’s character of Matt, who is a widower himself. Charlotte ultimately gives Matt some powerful advice as he deals with the loss of his wife.
While they weren’t playing husband and wife this time, their chemistry was still palpable.
“It was great not to play the wife [this time], it was great,” Travis gushed. “It was really fun to be able to just come in and have a whole wealth of knowledge and rapport working with Tim.”

Travis went on to say that the decade of working with Allen on Last Man Standing allowed them to immediately get back into their “rhythm” on Shifting Gears.
“In terms of comedic rhythm, knowing how to set up a joke and how to tell a story together, it was great to be able to take that and apply it to Charlotte,” she explained. “You wonder how Nancy Travis is going to come back into this Shifting Gears world and I think it’s a unique and clever way that they’ve engineered this.”
“Charlotte is a catalyst for him,” she continued. “It was fun to play the role of someone who has a shared experience with Tim’s character, which is true in real life. We shared the experience of making Last Man Standing and at the same time my Shifting Gears character is a stranger — just somebody that Matt meets who can inform his life.”
Will Travis Be Allen’s Sitcom Wife Again?
Though Travis enjoyed working with Allen again, she’s in no rush to be his sitcom wife for a second time.
“I do enjoy working with him but I think that it’s fun to explore new and different relationships between characters. It is very meta — maybe too meta,” she admitted. “I really like what they created, which is a soulmate friend. Maybe it’s like the ghost of his ex-wife — Vanessa — who comes in the spirit of somebody else. But I like the nuances of what they created with this different relationship.”
Last Man Standing is regarded by many as one of the funniest sitcoms of all time. Indeed, Allen and Travis’ chemistry played a huge role in the show’s success. We can only hope that Travis makes more guest appearances on Shifting Gears, because we love seeing her and Allen onscreen together again!
