Tim Allen is currently enjoying the success of yet another sitcom, as he is starring in the hit ABC television show Shifting Gears. The man just can’t miss when it comes to sitcoms!
Now, Allen is being praised by Jenna Elfman, who has recently been cast as his character’s new love interest. In fact, her first episode is set to air tonight!
Elfman Gushes Over Allen
Elfman, 53, is best known for starring on the sitcom Dharma & Greg from 1997 until 2002. Even after decades of success in Hollywood, however, working with Allen, 71, on Shifting Gears has been a career highlight for Elfman.
How often do you get to work with someone who has achieved a career-making hit not once, not twice, but three times?
“I love doing scenes with Tim,” Elfman gushed to US Weekly. “I got very excited and it took me a couple episodes to go, ‘OK, who are we in this? Who are you? How is he playing within this format? How is his timing?’ It takes a moment to see how we’re dancing together as partners.”
Elfman went on to praise Allen for being an amazing scene partner to her.
“He’s so confident as a comedic actor,” she explained. “He’s just confident and I’m confident and we don’t care if something [doesn’t land]. When you’ve been doing it long enough, you’re not paranoid about a joke not working and you don’t care. There’s no preciousness and there’s enough confidence to support the exploration of the scene of humor.”
But speaking of Dharma & Greg… remember this hairdo?

Allen ‘Has Faith’ In Elfman
This allowed Elfman to push herself even further when performing her own character.
“I really appreciate that, because you have two confident people playing and it feels really good,” she admitted. “The other thing I really appreciate from Tim is he grants me total freedom to occupy the space with whatever I’m bringing. I don’t feel like he’s sitting there judging…I don’t feel like he’s sitting there evaluating my comedy or my ability to do a joke.”
“I just feel like he has faith in my ability and everyone around him,” Elfman continued. “I’m allowed to be myself in the space in front of him. That kind of trust when you’re doing comedy is really great.”

Elfman’s Role On Shifting Gears
On tonight’s episode of Shifting Gears, Elfman plays a choreographer named Eve Drake. Her character owns a dance studio across from the classic car restoration shop run by Allen’s character, Matt, who is a widower. The episode’s official teaser states that “the feud between Parker Customs and Premiere Dance Lab heats up when Matt confronts the owner over a picnic table placed in the shared alleyway.”
While Eve and Matt may get off to a rough start, Elfman has made it clear to fans that their “dynamic” will change over time. Indeed, it’s already been confirmed that Elfman’s role will be recurring on Shifting Gears, so Eve and Matt are just getting started!
“You’re going to see more of the dynamic between Matt and Eve,” said Elfman. “Just more forthright communication, opinions and exchange. You get to see people being their full selves in each other’s face. It’s really fun.”
Though Elfman has worked on many sitcoms over the years, she particularly has enjoyed her role on Shifting Gears.
“It’s a sitcom but it’s grounded with talent, who knows how to act and who knows how to deliver comedy,” Elfman concluded. “At the same time, the writing really supports that as well. Everything felt right for me to come play and I’m so glad I did because I had a very good time. We just finished filming the final episode last night and it’s so good.”
Elfman’s first episode of Shifting Gears airs tonight at 8pm on ABC. Be sure to tune in, as this is one episode that you do not want to miss!
