The 53-year-old actress feared being left bedbound and hopeless after being diagnosed with the incurable chronic autoimmune disease in 2018, which she was thrilled to receive, as it made Selma feel better about herself since she knew what was going on.

Selma subsequently underwent chemotherapy and stem cell treatment. The disease, which impacts the brain and spinal cord, went into remission three years later.

It signaled her return to work, and “surpassed” her “expectations of what I can do as a person”.

Back on Set

Although Selma is “happy to be back” on sets – having just wrapped her guest role on Murder in a Small Town – and is “absolutely capable of working.” The star stressed navigating her career with multiple sclerosis is “still tricky sometimes”.

But being surrounded by people who supported the Cruel Intentions entertainer on her return to acting allowed Selma to “regain my confidence and be able to get out and do more”.

She added to People, “And do more for other people too, which always feels better.”

But one comeback Selma vows to make is the Met Gala – “fashion’s biggest night out”.

The Legally Blonde alum was a “big attendee” at the glitzy bash held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She cannot wait to don a jaw-dropping outfit and strut her stuff on the red carpet again.

She recalled to Us Weekly, “I have wonderful memories of it. My first time was with Behnaz Sarafpour, then I went a couple years with Chanel, and more recently, I think, with Marc Jacobs – but that was probably 20 years ago. So I love it.”

Celebrities descended on the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Monday (05.04.26) for the fundraiser, benefitting the venue’s Costume Institute.

Selma watched the event – the theme being “Costume Art” – from the comfort of her home. She added, “I love watching what everyone’s wearing and I will be watching [on Monday].”

Positive Outlook

Last year, the Hellboy cast member shared she has more “stamina and energy” to leave her home as she continues to live with multiple sclerosis.

Selma’s good health sparked dreams for her future.

She explained to People, “I think maybe since the diagnosis. You’re just tired all the time. I spent so much of my life so tired from being unwell that I think I just was trying to get through the day.”

“And now it’s like, wait, I realise I don’t know what my goals are.”
