The Hollywood star Sean Penn and the singer Madonna were married from 1985 until 1989. Madonna later shocked her fans by describing Penn as the love of her life.

Now, Penn has hit back with a brutal response to this.

Penn’s Brutal Response To Madonna

While appearing on Louis Theroux’s podcast, Penn, 64, was asked about Madonna, 66, saying that he was still the love of her life in the 1991 documentary Truth or Dare.

Penn brutally replied, “It didn’t take us long to realize that we had mistaken a good first date for a wedding partner.”

Ouch, that has got to sting for Madonna!

During this interview, Theroux asked Penn, “Did you see the documentary they made about her?”

“Oh, yeah I know about that. Yep,” Penn responded.

Theroux continued, “And then they ask her ‘who’s the love of your life?’ Do you, do you remember that?”

“I do. I remember what she said,” Penn replied. “She’s very sweet. Look, she’s been a good friend for a lot of years. It didn’t take us long to realize that we had mistaken a good first date for a wedding partner.”

“It didn’t take us long to recover after we got divorced, maybe a year, in a friendship,” he added. “I have a lot of fond memories of it – it’s not all jail. But there was a lot of alcohol and she’d be fairly accusing me of that.”

Penn’s Fans Respond

This interview did not go over well with Penn’s fans, as they said that he looked “rough.” Indeed, he looked tired, had bags under his eyes, and a bruise on his nose.

“He looks rough,” one fan commented. Another questioned, “He’s only 64?!?”

“I’m his age. My 95 year old father looks younger than him,” a third social media user wrote. A fourth added, “He looks okay for a man in his 80s.”

Penn and Madonna married in 1985. Their marriage was a bit of a rollercoaster, and she filed for divorce in 1987. They soon reconciled, but they finally split for good in 1989.

Rumors swirled for years that Penn had been violent towards Madonna. It was claimed that he once tied her to a chair. It was also alleged that he hit her with a baseball bat. Both Penn and Madonna have denied that he was ever violent towards her, however.

“She’s someone I love,” Penn said last year as he once again denied these allegations.

Madonna Defends Penn

In 2015, Madonna testified that she was never abused by Penn. She did so in Penn’s $10 million defamation lawsuit against Lee Daniels. This came after the Empire star Terrance Howard admitted to slapping his wife in front of their children. Daniels defended Howard by saying that he had never done what “Marlon Brando or Sean Penn” did.

“While we certainly had more than one heated argument during our marriage, Sean has never struck me, ‘tied me up’ or physically assaulted me, and any report to the contrary is completely outrageous, malicious, reckless and false,” Madonna testified.

The lawsuit was eventually settled, and Daniels issued a public apology to Penn. He also had to make a donation to Penn’s disaster relief organization CORE.

Penn and Madonna have become friends in the decades since their split.

“It turns out it’s a lot quicker to repair a friendship after divorce if there are not kids involved,” Penn previously explained.

While Madonna likely won’t be happy about Penn’s latest comments about their marriage, we’re glad that they were able to put their differences aside and become friends. If only all former couples could be so lucky!
