Savannah Guthrie was absent from her typical role on the TODAY show on Monday morning. This comes as it’s been announced that her 84 year-old mother Nancy Guthrie has gone missing.
Nancy Guthrie Goes Missing
Sheinelle Jones filled in for Savannah alongside Craig Melvin. They immediately addressed her absence.
“We want to get right to what is a deeply personal story for us, Nancy Guthrie, Savannah’s beloved mother, has been reported missing in Arizona,” Melvin said.
Savannah, 54, then released a statement of her own.
“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers, and messages of support. Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear mom,” she said. “We thank law enforcement for their hard work on this case and encourage anyone with information to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department at 520-351-4900.”
A spokesperson for the Guthrie family told The New York Post, “We can confirm this is a missing persons case, and the family is working closely with local law enforcement. If anyone has any information, please contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department at 520-351-4900. The family is grateful for the outreach, thoughts and prayers.”
Savannah has always been very close to her mother. Her father Charles died when she was only 16 years-old. This left Nancy as a single mother of three children, including Savannah.
Nancy was reportedly last seen at around 9:30pm or 9:45pm at her home on Saturday, January 31. She was later reported missing by a relative at noon on Sunday, February 1.
Sheriff Speaks Out
The Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos held a press conference on Sunday night. There, he said that Nancy has “no cognitive issues at all. She’s very alert, she’s of good, sound mind.”
The sheriff went on to say that the scene at Nancy’s house was “very concerning” and of “grave concern.” This has caused law enforcement to feel the need to act urgently.
Sheriff Nones also said that while Nancy has no mental issues, she is “not in good physical health.”
Police are using using airplanes, drones, helicopters and search-and-rescue dogs that have been loaned to them by Border Patrol in a desperate attempt to find Nancy. Foul play has not been ruled out, and homicide detectives are actively involved in the investigation despite the lack of a body.
“We’ve pretty much thrown everything at this as we can,” Nanos said. “I don’t need to tell you, this is very concerning to us; we don’t typically get the sheriff out on a scene like this but it is very concerning.”
“I hope we find her safe and sound, but we can’t ignore what’s in front of us,” the sheriff added.
Nancy has appeared on the TODAY show many times over the years. She most recently made an appearance in November of 2025, when Savannah did a segment on her hometown of Tucson, Arizona.
Meanwhile, Jenna Bush Hager said on the TODAY show this morning that she knows Nancy personally. She added that Nancy is currently without her medication that she needs for survival.
Nancy is described as being 5 feet, 5 inches tall. She weighs 150 pounds and has brown hair and blue eyes.
Please join us in saying a prayer for the safe return of Nancy Guthrie.
