A-list Hollywood star Sandra Bullock is speaking out to issue a warning to her fans about social media scammers who are seemingly pretending to be her family members.
Bullock Issues Warning
Scams are a tale as old as time, but they’ve gotten increasingly easier to pull off in the age of the internet.
“My family’s safety, as well as the innocent people being taken advantage of, is my deep concern, and there will be a time when I will comment more, but for now our focus is helping law enforcement handle this matter,” Bullock, 60, told People Magazine.
“Please be aware that I do not participate in any form of social media,” she continued. “Any accounts pretending to be me or anyone associated with me are fake accounts and have been created for financial gain or to exploit people around me.”
This warning came after Bullock’s younger sister Gesine Bullock-Prado, who is a baking instructor and TV personality in her own right, took to social media on Sunday to say that scammers are pretending to be her on Facebook.
“I spend multiple times a day reporting fakes, dealing with weird & scary emails to my BUSINESS and HOME from men who believe that, through one of these many fake ‘me’s, they have a relationship with my sister through private messages and off app sites and have been giving (sometimes) THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS to an incredibly famous and successful grown assed woman,” Bullock-Prado wrote.
Bullock-Prado Doubles Down
Bullock-Prado’s post came alongside multiple screenshots of the fake accounts. She went on to call out “a few FB imposter accounts, all of which I’ve reported both on this app and to a live human” at Meta.
“Surprise! They are all still up!” she added. “When I report, i also report to a security service that gives the account addresses directly to a Meta employee.”
Bullock-Prado went so far as to allege that “these accounts are run by crime rings” that “also run fake groups where a fake me posts ‘official statements.’ Not me. This is my only account and y’all know it’s about baking, cooking, animals, and gardening. I’m a middle aged woman with a life and I don’t troll around at 54 DMing people.”
Meta Responds
A spokesperson for Meta has since responded in a brief statement.
“People who impersonate others on Facebook and Instagram violate our policies, and we remove this content when it’s found — like we are doing in this case,” the statement read. “We continue to invest in technology to improve our detection and enforcement against scams and work with law enforcement to prosecute scammers.”
Bullock is an Oscar-winning actress who has been one of the most famous stars in Hollywood for decades. It’s sad to see her family members being targeted by scammers, simply because of their associations with her. In the end, this serves as a reminder to us all to stay vigilant when it comes to social media. It’s a dangerous world out there, even online. Don’t let yourself become the victim of one of these internet scams!
