The British royal family was rocked by a devastating death on Thursday when Katharine, the Duchess of Kent, passed away at the age of 92.

Duchess Of Kent Passes Away

Buckingham Palace announced Katharine’s death on Friday morning.

“It is with deep sorrow that Buckingham Palace announces the death of Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Kent,” the palace said in a statement obtained by People Magazine. “Her Royal Highness passed away peacefully last night at Kensington Palace, surrounded by her family.”

“The King and Queen and all Members of The Royal Family join The Duke of Kent, his children and grandchildren in mourning their loss and remembering fondly The Duchess’s life-long devotion to all the organizations with which she was associated, her passion for music and her empathy for young people,” the palace continued.

Prince William, the heir to the British throne, and his wife Kate Middleton released a brief statement honoring Katharine after her death.

“Our thoughts today are with The Duke of Kent and his family, particularly George, Helen and Nicholas,” they said. “The Duchess worked tirelessly to help others and supported many causes, including through her love of music. She will be a much missed member of the family.”

Katharine’s History

Katharine was born Katharine Worsley on February 22, 1933. She was “the youngest child and only daughter of the late Sir William Worsley,” according to her official biography.

“From an early age she demonstrated a talent for music,” her biography read. She was taught to play the piano, organ and violin, which she played throughout her life. She worked for some time in a children’s home in York and taught at a nursery/pre-school in London, before going on to Oxford to study music.”

Katharine married Queen Elizabeth’s cousin Prince Edward, the Duke of Kent, in 1961. The couple went on to have three children: George, Earl of St. Andrews, Lady Helen Windsor and Lord Nicholas Windsor. Sadly, Katharine also gave birth to a stillborn son, later saying that this experience had a “most devastating effect on me.”

Katharine withdrew from royal duties in 1996. Afterwards, she spent a decade teaching music at a primary school in Hull. There, she humbly went by the name Mrs. Kent.

“Only the head knew who I was,” Katharine later said. “The parents didn’t know, and the pupils didn’t know. No one ever noticed. There was no publicity about it at all — it just seemed to work.”

In 2004, Katharine founded the charity Future Talent. This organization teams up with schools with the aim of “bringing music into the lives of all children, spotting talent, equipping talented children with instruments and tuition and, in exceptional cases, providing master tuition to enable them to make music their future.”

Katharine Still Attended Royal Events

Though she was no longer a working royal, Katharine still attended such major royal events as William and Kate’s 2011 wedding. She also attended the wedding of William’s younger brother Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle in 2018.

However, Katharine was noticeably absent from the Queen’s funeral in 2022. She also did not attend King Charles’ coronation one year later.

This death has clearly hit the royal family very hard, as Katharine was a widely beloved figure. Please join us in saying a prayer for the royals as they mourn her.

Rest in peace Katharine, Duchess of Kent.
