The legendary former All In The Family star Rob Reiner was found dead on Sunday alongside his wife Michelle in their Los Angeles mansion. Their son Nick has since been arrested in connection with their deaths.
Rob Reiner Murdered With Wife
Rob, 78, and Michelle, 68, were reportedly found dead by their daughter Romy at around 3:30pm on Sunday. Their son Nick, 32, has since been arrested. He’s been charged with a felony that hasn’t been specified, and he’s being held on $4 million bail.
“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner,” the Reiner family told Variety. “We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time.”
A police source told Daily Mail that the couple was found with brutal stab wounds in their $13.5 million mansion. According to this source, their throats had been slit.
Rob and Michelle were found by their daughter Romy, who lives across the street. She reportedly immediately told police that her brother Nick “should be a suspect” because he is “dangerous.”
Nick’s Addiction Struggles
Rob and Michelle had been married since 1989. They met while he was directing his classic movie When Harry Met Sally. They went on to have three children: Jake, Nick, and Romy. Nick had been open about his issues with drug addiction in the past.
In 2016, Nick told People Magazine that he began using drugs in his early teenage years. His addiction reportedly became so bad that he was living on the street at one point. Nick began going in and out of rehab at the age of 15. This struggle later became the basis for the semi-autobiographical film Being Charlie, which he co-wrote.
“Now, I’ve been home for a really long time, and I’ve sort of gotten acclimated back to being in L.A. and being around my family,” Nick said in that interview.
Rob and Nick collaborated on Being Charlie together. While promoting the movie, Rob admitted to having regrets about how he handled Nick’s issues with addiction.
“I mean, you know, we got into issues [but] … the whole process for me, it did make me understand him a lot more and I think it made me a better father, hopefully it did,” Rob, who directed the movie, told BUILD Series in 2015.
“It really clicked for me, because we didn’t bond a lot as a kid,” Nick explained in that same interview. “He really liked baseball, I like basketball and he could watch that with my brother, baseball. But when I saw him do that [directing], it was something that I’m interested in, I was like, ‘Wow, like he really knows a lot.’ And it made me feel closer to him.”
Rob And Michelle ‘Were Desperate’
Both Rob and Michelle chimed back in to talk about how “desperate” they were during the times when Nick was struggling.
“When Nick would tell us that it wasn’t working for him, we wouldn’t listen,” Rob lamented. “We were desperate and because the people had diplomas on their wall, we listened to them when we should have been listening to our son.”
“We were so influenced by these people,” Michelle confessed. “They would tell us he’s a liar, that he was trying to manipulate us. And we believed them.”
Please join us in saying a prayer for the Reiner family as they struggle with this unimaginable loss.
