The beloved actor Rob Lowe is speaking out this week to reveal the powerful piece of aging advice that he received from the Hollywood legend Clint Eastwood, who knows a thing or two about it.

Lowe Takes Inspiration From Eastwood’s Aging Motto

Eastwood, 94, once told Lowe, 61, his own aging motto, and it’s stuck with him for decades.

That simple motto is: “Never let the old man in.”

Indeed, Lowe has truly taken this motto to heart.

“It’s not just physical,” Lowe recently said of aging as he stood by Eastwood’s motto. “People always say, ‘What does it mean to be youthful and all of that?’ And honestly, I get the sense that you know this: It’s an inside job.”

“Like, think about what’s youthful: Youthful are kids, and what are kids? They’re curious, they’re enthusiastic, they’re active, they’re interested, they’re interesting, and they’re not checked-out,” he continued. “As we get older, those are harder and harder and harder for us to do.”

“So you don’t have those qualities, it doesn’t make a difference if you’ve got a great-looking face and a 32-inch waist; no one’s going to say you’re youthful,” Lowe concluded.

Toby Keith Also Loved Eastwood’s Motto

Lowe isn’t the only celebrity to take Eastwood’s “never let the old man in” motto to heart. In December of 2023, just two months before his death, the country music star Toby Keith revealed that Eastwood’s motto inspired him to write his hit song “Don’t Let The Old Man In.”

“I’m Clint Eastwood’s partner at his golf tournament. He’s 93 this year, by the way,” Keith explained. “Several years ago at the first event I played with him… I [asked], ‘What keeps you going at your age?’ He said, ‘I try to get up every day and be productive — not let that old man in.’”

“So I came home and said, ‘I’m going to write him a song,'” he added. “I didn’t know I was going to have to live those words in a few years.”

Keith’s Previous Comments On Eastwood’s Motto

Keith previously opened up more about this in a video posted to Instagram. He explained that when he met Eastwood, the iconic Hollywood director was filming his 2018 movie The Mule. Keith couldn’t help but be in awe that Eastwood was still making movies at his age.

“It’s an interesting story, how this song came to be. Clint Eastwood, when asked by me, what he was gonna do on his birthday, he said he was gonna go shoot a movie. He was 88 years old, and I said, ‘what do you do to keep yourself going?’ He said, ‘I try to get up and be productive, and don’t let the old man in,'” Keith recalled.

“So, I wrote (the song, and) sent it to him,” Keith continued. “He put it in that movie, The Mule, and then it exploded on NBC when I sang it on the People’s Choice [Country] Awards when I was getting the Icon (Award).”

Sadly, Keith ended up dying of stomach cancer in February of 2024 at the age of 62. While it’s devastating that Keith is gone, we’re glad that he “never let the old man in,” right to the very end!

We applaud Eastwood for continuing to be an inspiration to celebrities like Lowe, Keith, and undoubtedly many more. If only we had more strong role models in Hollywood like Clint Eastwood!
