Last month, we reported that the legendary fitness guru Richard Simmons had been found dead at his home in Los Angeles one day after his 76th birthday. Now, his cause of death has finally been revealed.

Simmons’ Cause Of Death Revealed

“This morning, Richard Simmons’ brother Lenny, received a call from the LA Coroner’s office,” a spokesperson for the Simmons family told People Magazine on Wednesday. “The Coroner informed Lenny that Richard’s death was accidental due to complications from recent falls and heart disease as a contributing factor.”

“The toxicology report was negative other than medication Richard had been prescribed,” the spokesperson added. “The Family wishes to thank everyone for their outpouring of love and support during this time of great loss.”

Simmons was found dead in his bedroom by his longtime housekeeper on July 13. While the Los Angeles Police Department said afterwards that “there is no foul play” suspected in his passing, Simmons’ official cause of death was originally deferred for additional testing.

Initial reports stated that Simmons had fallen in his bathroom the night before his death. Though his housekeeper urged him to go to the hospital, he wanted to spend his birthday at home. Simmons reportedly assured her that he would seek medical care the next day if he had to do so. Sadly, he never got the chance, as she found him dead the next morning.

Simmons’ Final Interview

Just two days before his death, Simmons gave a rare interview in which he said that he planned to celebrate his 76th birthday by blowing out a candle. He made sure to add that “the candle will probably be on a zucchini. You know, I’m a vegetarian.”

Despite his decades of fame, Simmons remained humble right until the end.

“I feel good! I am grateful that I’m here, that I am alive for another day,” he said. “I’ll spend my birthday doing what I do every day, which is to help people.”

“Today is a beautiful day,” he continued. “But nothing’s really different. I got up this morning. I said my prayers, I counted my blessings, and then I went to work. You know? And writing messages, answering emails — and when the email is real extreme, I ask for their numbers, and I call them. I’m feeling great, ‘cause I’m helping people.”
