The Hollywood star Olivia Munn, 43, has shockingly revealed that she underwent a full hysterectomy last month amidst her battle with breast cancer.

Munn Undergoes Hysterectomy

“I have now had an oophorectomy and hysterectomy,” Munn told Vogue. “I took out my uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries.”

Though this procedure will be life altering for Munn, she firmly believes that it was the “best decision” for her.

“It was a big decision to make, but it was the best decision for me because I needed to be present for my family,” she said.

Munn and her comedian partner John Mulvaney welcomed their son Malcolm in November of 2021, and she’s determined to be present for his childhood.

“It’s his childhood, but it’s my motherhood, and I don’t want to miss any of these parts if I don’t have to,” she explained.

Munn’s Fifth Surgery

This procedure was Munn’s fifth surgery in her cancer journey, as she has also undergone a full double mastectomy, a lymph node dissection, reconstructive surgery and a nipple delay, according to Page Six. Prior to her hysterectomy, Munn was suppressing the estrogen in her body by taking Lupron, which left her so exhausted that she became bedridden.

“I would wake up in the morning and almost immediately need to get back into bed,” she lamented.

Munn found it heartbreaking that her son’s main image of her was as someone who stays in bed all the time.

In this same interview, Munn revealed that she decided to freeze her eggs for a third time, after previously doing so when she was 33 and 39.

“John and I talked about it a lot and we don’t feel like we’re done growing our family, but didn’t know if I would have to do chemotherapy or radiation,” she said.

Munn went on to say that she and Mulvaney “just started crying” when they were told that they had two healthy embryos. She explained that her cancer journey has made her “grateful” to not only have options to fight her disease, but also to have options to have more children if she decides to do so, as she knows that not all women are as lucky as she is.

Munn’s Breast Cancer Diagnosis

Munn revealed her breast cancer diagnosis to the world back in an Instagram post back in March, when she also announced that she had undergone a double mastectomy. Her diagnosis was shocking because it came after she tested negative for the BRCA gene and got a clear mammogram, yet her doctor found that her Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Score was at 37 percent.

Munn then underwent an MRI, which resulted in her being diagnosed with luminal B cancer in both breasts, which is described as an “aggressive, fast moving cancer.” Munn is hoping that by going public with her story, she will inspire other women to stay up to date on their breast cancer tests.
