Yesterday, we reported that Dolly Parton’s husband Carl Dean, who she was married to for nearly 60 years, died on Monday at the age of 82.

Now, surprising details have emerged about what Dolly described as their “open” marriage!

Parton And Dean’s ‘Open’ Marriage

Parton, 79, and Dean were married since 1966. Though Parton is one of the most famous women in the word, Dean famously preferred to stay out of the spotlight. This was just fine with Parton, as she and Dean typically let one another do their own thing.

In fact, Parton often claimed that they had an “open” marriage. But not in the gross way you think!

“He’s not jealous and I’m not jealous of him. He knows I flirt. He flirts too,” Parton previously explained.

“Yes, it’s an open relationship, but NOT sexually and I would kill him if I thought he was doing that. He would shoot me too,” she quickly added. “At the end of the day we love each other mad.”

Phew! She had us worried for a minute there…

In another interview, Parton revealed what Dean really thought about the frequent rumors that she was having affairs with Hollywood stars like Sylvester Stallone and Burt Reynolds. While some men would be enraged by this, Dean found the rumors to be hilarious. Indeed, Dean was someone who had quite a sense of humor.

“Sometimes he goes to the grocery store and he sees a magazine with some story about me and he’ll get it and bring it home and say, ‘I see you’re having Burt Reynolds’s baby again,'” Parton once told The Mirror.

Dean Was A ‘Homebody’ Who Had No Interest In Fame

Despite Parton’s immense fame, Dean was a “homebody” who preferred living a quiet life on their Tennessee farm. In another interview, Parton explained that this is how Dean was from the very beginning of her country music career.

“I took him to the first award show when I first won an award when we first married in ‘66, and he just started taking clothes off before we even got out of the building,” Parton previously told Fox News. “Before we got to the car, he had that bow tie off from that tuxedo, that shirt jacket off.”

“And he said, ’Now I want you to be successful. Do whatever you want to do, but leave me out of this. I ain’t doing any more of these things, so don’t ask me.’ So I never did,” she added.

Dean Avoiding The Spotlight Helped His Marriage To Parton

When asked if this contributed to the longevity of their marriage, Parton replied, “Well, I think it does. And, one, the fact that he’s not in show business at all. So we’re not in competition on that. We don’t have to deal with it.”

“He’s kind of a homebody,” she continued. “He loves working on the farm, he loves working on his tractors and his trucks and all that. He was in asphalt paving for years. And then he went in kind of doing some real estate, but he didn’t want to be in the spotlight.”

Though Dean didn’t have any interest in fame himself, Parton clarified that he was always “very proud of and for me. So it’s all good. But I laugh. But, you know, he said, ‘That’s for you, not me.'”

Parton Mourns Dean

Parton has understandably been left devastated by Dean’s death.

“Carl and I spent many wonderful years together,” she said in a brief statement. “Words can’t do justice to the love we shared for over 60 years. Thank you for your prayers and sympathy.”

This is clearly an extremely difficult time for Parton. Please join us in saying a prayer for her.
