Early Career

He worked steadily across stage, film, and television while sharing the screen with acting legends including the late Sir Sean Connery, Harrison Ford, 83, and 87-year-old Sir Ian McKellen.

His final stage performance came in a 2018 production of Mary Stuart, bringing the curtain down on a remarkable career that lasted more than six decades.

Michael’s acting journey began in the 1960s, when he established himself in the theater, appearing alongside late actors Dame Maggie Smith and Sir Robert Stephens in acclaimed productions of The Royal Hunt of the Sun and Trelawny of the Wells.

From there, he became one of the industry’s most dependable supporting actors, moving effortlessly between Shakespeare, historical dramas, action adventures, and fantasy epics.

Iconic Roles

Movie fans perhaps remember him best as the ruthless Colonel Vogel opposite Harrison Ford in the 1989 adventure Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, where he played one of the franchise’s most memorable villains.

He also left his mark on another iconic series when he appeared opposite Pierce Brosnan, 73, in the 1997 James Bond action-thriller Tomorrow Never Dies.

His impressive resume stretched across an extraordinary range of films, including The Eagle Has Landed (1976), A Bridge Too Far (1977), The Medusa Touch (1978), The Sum of All Fears (2002), and Gangs of New York (2002).

Fantasy audiences also recognized Michael from 2010’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, in which he portrayed the powerful dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald, while his moving performance opposite Ian McKellen in Apt Pupil showcased the dramatic depth that defined much of his career.

In the 1995 historical epic Braveheart, Michael once again demonstrated the quiet authority that made him such a sought-after performer throughout Hollywood and the United Kingdom.
