In March of last year, we reported that the Hollywood stars Meryl Streep and Martin Short had been quietly dating for quite some time.
Since then, Streep and Short have been laying low. This has led many to question whether or not the two entertainment icons are still together.
Now, insiders are speaking out to confirm that Streep and Short are still going strong. Indeed, according to these sources, there is “no doubt they are in love.”
Streep’s Devotion To Short
The love that Streep, 76, has for Short, 76, is reportedly so strong that she is considering winding down her decades-long film career just to spend more time with him in their twilight years.
“Meryl has been able to do what she has wanted for quite a while. But she is doing that even more because she doesn’t have anything else to prove,” an insider close to the couple told Daily Mail. This source added that Streep, a three-time Oscar-winner, does not “need any other awards or fanfare.”
As she prepares to turn 77 next month, Streep’s focus is on “enjoying life and being happy.” She’s going about this by spending “lots of time” with Short, who “makes her laugh constantly.”
“He has invigorated her life so deeply, and loves the love that they share,” the source gushed. “And now wants to be surrounded by it at all costs.”
The insider went on to say that while Streep will still “do gigs here and there” and some voice work, her focus moving forward is Short, who she refers to by the affectionate nickname “Marty.”
Streep And Short’s History
Streep, who is notoriously private, revealed in 2023 that she had quietly separated from her husband, the sculptor Don Gummer, six years earlier. Though they remain legally married, it seems that the separation is permanent. They share four children together.
Meanwhile, Short was married to the actress Nancy Dolman from 1980 until she died of ovarian cancer in 2010. She was 58 years-old. Short and Dolman share three children.
Sadly, their daughter Katherine died by suicide in February of this year at the age of 42. This only brought up painful memories of losing Dolman for Short. Throughout his grief over the past few months, Streep has stepped up to be his rock.
Streep Helps Short Through Grief
Streep and Short connected while filming their comic-crime series Only Murders in the Building, which also stars Steve Martin. The insider said that since then, they’ve only “grown closer by working together and dealing with the challenges of life, especially after his daughter [Katherine’s] passing.”
“Martin knows all too well about loss,” the source added. “When he lost Nancy to cancer, that was the most life-altering thing that had ever happened to him, so when his daughter died, those same feelings came back and opened some emotional wounds that he never wanted to revisit.”
“But this time around, he had Meryl, Steve, and other friends are really there for him,” the insider continued. “Meryl has been such a force and impact to his life, and has absolutely taken on the role of Martin’s rock.”
All seven of their adult children also get along famously. They are just “happy that their parents have found someone they really enjoy.”
Streep And Short’s Date Night
Earlier this month, Streep and Short were seen dining at the Chateau Marmont hotel in Los Angeles. A second source stated that they were “holding hands under the table” as they “dined in the garden.”
The Chateau Marmont, a celebrity hotspot, has a strict no photos policy in the garden. This allows their celebrity clientele to feel comfortable dining there in privacy.
The second insider explained that hotel staffers “keep an eagle eye out for anyone who so much as raises their phone to take pictures. If they see it’s about to happen, they rush over and stop the person.”
During their meal, Streep and Short were “acting like teens.” Indeed, they were “whispering to each other,” which made it “obvious they’re more than friends.”
Streep and Short ended up leaving the hotel separately at around 11pm.
“After all the tragedies Martin’s been through, with so many people close to him dying, it was beautiful to see him so happy,” the second insider concluded. “What was interesting is that they’ve both been denying they’re in a romantic relationship. But seeing them inside the Chateau there’s no doubt they are in love.”
Streep and Short truly do make an adorable couple. They serve as a reminder that it’s never to late to find love again in love. Here’s hoping that Streep and Short have many years of love and happiness together to come.
