Back in December, we reported that Meghan Markle’s estranged father Thomas had his leg amputated in emergency surgery to save his life. Now, a sad update has come in about Thomas two months later as he continues to recover from this.
Update On Thomas After Leg Amputation
Meghan’s estranged half-brother Thomas Jr., 59, told The Mirror that Thomas, 81, is in the process of being fitted for a prosthetic leg. He also revealed that this has been a difficult two months for Thomas, who has been in rehabilitation ever sine his amputation was carried out.
“He’s going through therapy. He’s going through physical rehab,” Thomas Jr. said from the Philippines, where his and Meghan’s father now lives.
“We’re going to have to get him fitted for a prosthetic here pretty soon and get that man walking again,” Thomas Jr. continued. “That’s the goal. That’s the priority.”
Thomas who is a former Hollywood director, nearly died in early December. That’s when a blood clot in his left thigh cut off the blood supply to his foot. This left doctors with no choice but to amputate his leg below the knee.
Thomas’ Health Battles Amidst Estrangement
Thomas has been in poor health for quite some time. Indeed, he has suffered from two heart attacks and a stroke in recent years.
Despite this, Meghan remains estranged from her father. She has not spoken to him directly since her 2018 wedding to Prince Harry. After the leg amputation, Meghan’s representative claimed that she had “reached out” to her father. She did so in the form of a letter delivered to his hospital bedside by officials with the U.S. embassy.
However, it does not appear that Meghan even deemed it necessary to speak to her father over the phone. According to Thomas Jr., Meghan has also not paid anything to help with their father’s medical care. He had previously claimed that Thomas’ health insurance will not cover the mounting cost of his care.
“It’s just mind-boggling how you could just continue to walk through life and not even give the man a phone call and pay for the best medical care that Dad needs right now,” Thomas Jr. lamented.
Addressing his half-sister directly, Thomas Jr. added, “I hope next time, Meghan, that you see a disabled person or somebody who has only one leg, I hope you think real hard.”
Royal Experts Urged Meghan To Show Compassion
After Thomas’ leg amputation, royal experts had advised Meghan to show compassion for her father in his time of need.
“Meghan has frantically tried to build a wholesome family-oriented brand in 2025,” Kinsey Schofield, host of YouTube’s Kinsey Schofield Unfiltered, told Fox News days after the procedure.
“It would be in her best interest to show her elderly father, who had just lost a limb, some compassion,” Schofield continued. “Otherwise, every time we see Meghan and Harry lovingly engage with wounded vets at Invictus, we will ask ourselves why they couldn’t show Meghan’s father the same compassion.”
“Right now, she is simultaneously promoting a holiday special centered on family,” she added. “At the very least, Thomas should be allowed to meet his grandchildren.”
It should be noted that Meghan released her Netflix Christmas special on the same day that Thomas was hospitalized. Check out a trailer for that special below.
Thomas has never met Harry, nor has he met his grandchildren Archie, 6, and Lilibet, 4. Over the years, he’s publicly begged for the chance to at least meet his grandchildren many times. Only time will tell if Meghan decides to ever bury the hatchet with him and let that happen.
