Last week, we reported that Meghan Markle had been named as the “most disappointing celebrity of 2025” by the Toronto Star. Now, Meghan’s reaction to this humiliating distinction has been revealed.
Let’s just say she’s not taking it well.
Meghan Is ‘Shaken’
According to a source close to Meghan, this article has landed particularly hard for her. Indeed, Meghan has taken quite a lot of criticism over the years, but this one stings particularly hard. This source is alleging that Meghan has been “left reeling” by the “most disappointing celebrity” moniker.
“This is the most painful review Meghan has had because it comes from a city that once gave her refuge and normality. It’s shaken her confidence,” the insider told Radar Online.
Before marrying Prince Harry in 2018, Meghan spent years living in Toronto, Canada. There, she filmed her TV series Suits, which she starred in from 2011-2018. This made it all the more “painful” for Meghan that her own hometown newspaper has turned on her.
Meghan’s ‘Disappointing’ 2025
In her piece for the Toronto Star, Patricia Treble wrote that Meghan, 44, has failed to capitalize on the opportunities that she’s had in the six years since she and Harry, 41, stepped down as senior royals. Patricia found this to be particularly “disappointing” because she believes that Meghan possesses “all the ingredients” to become a global cultural force.
Patricia wrote that Meghan’s 2025 “slowly deflated as each project failed to deliver as expected.”
“There’s no sign of a second season for her podcast,” Patricia wrote. “Netflix hasn’t officially renewed her show on the eve of its one-off holiday special.”
“It also ended the exclusive and very lucrative five-year deal with the Sussexes, instead opting for a frugal ‘first peek’ deal,” she continued. “As of now, no new projects have been greenlit. Her As Ever homewares site has just 15 items for sale, ranging from $12 (U.S.) raspberry spread to a $35 Sauvignon Blanc (to customers only in the continental U.S.).”
According to Patricia, six years after stepping down as a senior royal, “Meghan wants everyone to know and acknowledge that she’s royal, without the obligations of working on behalf of the monarch, including all those endless engagements for worthy causes.”
Meghan’s Humiliating Netflix Downgrade
Perhaps the article stings Meghan because she can’t deny that her 2025 was disappointing. Indeed, this comes four months after Netflix downgraded Meghan and Harry from their $100 million contract. Instead, Netflix gave them a far more modest “first look” deal moving forward.
Meghan and Harry had signed their $100 million Netflix contract back in 2020 after they stepped down as senior royals. That deal is set to expire next month.
On August 11, Netflix announced that it will not be renewing Meghan and Harry’s $100 million contract. Instead, Netflix has given them a “multi-year, first look deal for film and television projects.” This “downgrade” is the same one that Netflix gave to Barack and Michelle Obama.
“In practice, it is a downgrade from the 2020 overall deal that birthed Harry & Meghan, Polo and With Love, Meghan, among other projects,” The Hollywood Reporter reported.
“The overall-to-first-look extension mirrors the move Netflix made recently with the Obamas — as well as others — for their Higher Ground banner,” the publication continued. “In both cases, the exclusivity carried by their respective, splashy original deals has been removed.”
With even her own adopted hometown turning on her, things certainly aren’t looking good for Meghan moving forward. Only time will tell if Meghan can bounce back from all of these fails in 2026!
