It’s been three and a half years since Queen Elizabeth passed away at the age of 96, but she is still missed by millions around the world to this day. Now, a royal biographer is claiming that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry caused the Queen “unforgivable” stress in the final years of her life.
Meghan And Harry Cause Queen ‘Stress’
This allegation was made by the royal biographer Hugo Vickers. He has written a new book, “Queen Elizabeth II: A Personal History.” In researching this book, Vickers spoke to multiple sources close to Buckingham Palace. Vickers was disturbed by what they told him about what Meghan and Harry did to the Queen before her death.
“What I find unforgivable is the stress that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle put on the Queen in the last years of her life,” Vickers told Fox News.
“[Harry] was doing a really good job over in England and indeed in the Commonwealth,” he continued. “And [Meghan] also seemed to be very committed to the Commonwealth. Even as an actress, before she met and married Prince Harry, she was going to African countries and undertaking humanitarian work. And obviously, she addressed the United Nations. It all looked very positive, but it wasn’t to be.”
Vickers made similar comments in his book.
“The distress the Sussexes caused the Queen in the last years of her life cannot be overestimated,” he wrote.
Meghan And Harry Turn On Royals
Meghan, 44, and Harry, 41, married in 2018. They proceeded to step down as senior royals in January of 2020. The couple then moved across the world to Southern California, where Meghan was born and raised.
Once they were settled in California, Meghan and Harry gave a bombshell tell-all interview to Oprah Winfrey. Indeed, they used this interview to shamelessly bash the royal family as they aired all their grievances. According to Vickers, the Queen refused to take Harry’s phone calls without another person in the room after that.
“I think that the Queen was obviously feeling rather cautious whenever he got in touch,” said Vickers. “I think that’s how I would put it.”
“Whenever Prince Harry called his grandmother, she asked her lady-in-waiting to stay with her,” Vickers later added in his book.
The Queen Rejects Harry’s Proposal
Vickers alleged that Harry decided to move to California after the Queen rejected his proposal to be “half-in, half-out” as a working royal.
“She did give Harry and Meghan a year to think about whether it was going to work out, this exile,” Vickers explained. “She made it quite clear on advice, obviously from her private secretary and his private secretary, and others, that you couldn’t be half in and half out. You couldn’t do what they wanted to do, which was to make their own money and still be contributing to royal duties. This wasn’t going to work. You either did your duties, or you didn’t.”
“And so, they decided that they were going to go off first to Canada. And then later on, to California,” he continued. “Then after the year went by, the question arose: ‘How was it working out?’ They decided that they were going to stay. And at that point, he stepped down from his various positions in England.”
The Queen Rips Into Harry
Vickers claimed that the Queen once told a friend that while Harry had once been in “a very useful role” as a popular working royal, he had “turned into a kind of childminder.” This implied that the Queen believed that Harry did little more than take care of his and Meghan’s two young children in California.
“The way I interpreted that, perhaps rather more harshly, was you cannot be Captain General of the Royal Marines, a very distinguished position which had been held by Prince Philip for many years, and lie barefoot under a tree in California,” Vickers stated.
The Queen’s view of Meghan allegedly evolved over time.
“How did the Queen’s view of Meghan Markle change?” said Vickers. “Well, I should imagine it changed quite a lot. She … [would have seen Harry go] off into a different world and not undertake his duties in the way she has done. I’m sure that was very distressing for her.”
“I think that their departure and the subsequent activities, particularly the Oprah Winfrey interview, obviously were very upsetting,” he added. “And she came up with that wonderful remark, ‘Recollections may vary,’ which was a very polite way of putting it. So I think it inevitably caused her distress.”
The Queen’s Difficult Final Years
In the end, Vickers believes that the Queen’s final years were unfortunately far from easy.
“What I feel sad about the Queen is that she had a lot of problems going on in the last years of her reign,” Vickers lamented. “She had Brexit, she had [former Prime Minister] Boris Johnson, she had issues with the [former] Prince Andrew, she had issues with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, whereas she should have been sailing into sort of sunlit uplands, enjoying her Platinum Jubilee.”
“… A lot was going on. But then, of course, there always had been all through the reign,” he concluded. “There were always problems that had to be dealt with.”
It’s sad that after a record-breaking 70 years on the British throne, the Queen had such a tough ending to her reign. We can’t help but think that Meghan and Harry should be ashamed of themselves for what they did to this incredible woman in the final years of her life.
Rest in peace, Queen Elizabeth.
