The Oscar-winning star Matthew McConaughey’s 16 year-old son Levi is preparing to make his acting debut in the coming of age movie Way of the Warrior Kid. On Monday, Levi did his first red carpet interview at the premiere of The Rivals of Amziah King at SXSW Film Festival in Austin.

There, Levi revealed the blunt advice his famously salt-of-the-earth father gave him as he embarks on his own Hollywood career.

Matthew’s Advice For Levi

So we’re dying to know, what would a relatively anti-Hollywood, common sense Oscar winning actor say to his actor son?

“I mean, he gave me a lot of advice, and he was able to mentor me in a couple different ways,” Levi told People Magazine.

“But I’d say the main thing for acting, and pardon my French, is no bull— in your bones and own what you’re doing and make a choice regardless if that ends up being the right one or the wrong one — commit to it and know what you’re saying,” he added.

Matthew Speaks Out

Matthew himself also talked about the advice he’s given his son.

“It’s one, you’ve got a natural ability. Two, how do we get specific about knowing where you’re coming from and where you’re going? Best acting for my money is when an actor’s caught in action, doing something,” Matthew explained. “Meaning, where were you before, and where are you going after, if the camera is rolling the whole time. So you come into the scene, so the scene doesn’t feel like a fresh start and a fresh ending.”

“The other thing is, take risks,” he continued. “Don’t be afraid to make a fool of yourself – I did it plenty of times, and it’s a lot easier to go big and come back down to reality than it is to come in under and push it to more energy later. It’s a lot easier to go big, make a fool of yourself, get embarrassed, and then bring it down to reality than it is to start with low energy and go, hey, we need more.”

Very interesting. Not a word about Levi’s potty mouth, either!

Deadline confirmed back in September that Levi would be starring in Way Of The Warrior Kid alongside Chris Pratt and Linda Cardellini.

Matthew Puts His Kids ‘To Work’

Levi is the oldest of the three children that Matthew shares with his wife Camila Alves. Their other two children are Vida, 14, and son Livingston, 11. Matthew has previously revealed that he often gives his children tasks to complete during their frequent visits to his film sets.

“I have my kids come out, we put them to work,” Matthew said in a 2020 interview. “We give them a little cash for catering. My daughter’s gone in to work with seamstresses and the costume departments.”

Matthew went on to say that he takes his job as a father very seriously.

“I’ve got a large hand in shepherding my three children up until they’re 18 and out of the house,” he said. “Yeah, see if I hold on to my words in a few years. That’s the thing I think I do most honorably is having three autonomous, conscientious, confident children.”

Way Of The Warrior Kid will likely premiere sometime in 2026. It will certainly be interesting to see if Levi has the same acting chops as his father does!
