Swedish actor and former Olympic-class weightlifter Kjell Nilsson has passed away at the age of 76. He is best remembered as the imposing gang leader Lord Humungus in George Miller’s Mad Max 2.

Death Announcement

Nilsson died peacefully at his home in Queensland, Australia, on Thursday, July 2nd. This follows a four-and-a-half-year struggle with kidney disease, according to a statement shared by his family on Facebook.

His family wrote, “It was a long and painful journey, filled with countless battles to overcome, including the gradual loss of his bodily autonomy.”

They added that Nilsson’s final days were “filled with joy, gratitude, peace, and acceptance. He did it his way.”

In a final act of defiance, Nilsson chose to stop his dialysis treatment, taking back control over his pain and body.

Doctors had predicted in 2022 that Nilsson would not survive past Christmas of that year. However, the actor defied expectations, living four more years surrounded by his loved ones.

Resilience Over the Years

The family also highlighted Nilsson’s remarkable resilience. They noted that 40 years ago, he had suffered severe blood clotting in his legs and was faced with a choice. Either undergo a double amputation or keep his legs, knowing they would remain compromised.

They said, “Against medical advice, Kjell chose to keep his legs. His relentless weight training, determination, and sheer force of will kept him alive for the next four decades despite his dire health issues. Even in his final days, many doctors could not fully explain how he had done it. Some referred to him as a walking miracle.”

Nilsson’s Acting Career

Nilsson’s career spanned both film and television. His most iconic role came in Mad Max 2, where he brought the terrifying Lord Humungus to life alongside Mel Gibson. His other credits include 1982’s The Pirate Movie, 1984’s Man of Letters, and 1989’s The Edge of Power.

Before his acting career, Nilsson moved from Sweden to Australia to train for the 1980 Moscow Olympics in weightlifting. It was there that he met actress Kate Ferguson, whom he married in Sweden before returning to Australia at her encouragement to pursue acting.

Nilsson is survived by his wife and five sons. The family has confirmed that a memorial ceremony will be held in his honor, with details of the time and location to be announced.
