Ice-T has been playing a police officer on Law & Order: SVU for 25 years. That’s already strange for those of us of a certain age, who remember Ice-T as one of the “original gangster” rappers from days past.

That’s why it’s doubly shocking that over the weekend when bodycam footage emerged showing Ice-T get into a verbal altercation with a cop in real life.

Ice-T Fights With Police Officer

This heated confrontation actually took place back in May. However, the bodycam footage was only just released on Sunday after it was obtained by TMZ.

It reportedly all started when Ice-T was pulled over for having expired license plates. It begins with a Hudson County Sheriff’s officer telling the rapper that his front license plate was missing and that his tags were expired.

Ice-T fired back by claiming to be on his way to a nearby DMV to update the paperwork on his Porsche. He added that he had been at the DMV trying to fix this issue the day before, but “their system was down.” Ice-T then claimed that the Porsche’s registration wasn’t up to date because it had been “parked.”

“Are you sure?” the cop asked.

“Yeah, of course I’m sure,” Ice-T replied. “Yesterday I went to the DMV and they said their system’s down, so that’s why I’m here. I got seven cars. I’m trying to get them all straight.”

When asked what time his DMV appointment was, Ice-T replied, “I don’t need one…They know me.”

Exchange Goes Off The Rails

Things really began to go off the rails when the officer asked for Ice-T’s driver’s license, only to be told that it was also expired.

“That’s why I’m going to the DMV. You have my paperwork. You’re fine,” Ice-T stated.

The rapper proceeded to tell the officer that he could either follow him to the DMV or allow him to park his car where it was and walk to the DMV. The cop, however, was not having either of these suggestions.

“You don’t gotta be that serious about this. I mean you can but you don’t have to,” a visibly irritated Ice-T exclaimed, to which the officer replied, “It is serious.”

Ice-T then asked the cop if he was going to “take me to jail.”

“I’m not going to take you to jail,” the cop replied, adding that he would only be towing the Porsche.

Let’s just say this didn’t sit well with Ice-T.

“You’re not gonna tow my [expletive] vehicle,” he shouted. “If I’m not under arrest, I’m getting out of the car.”

Backup Called In

The situation only escalates from there, with Ice-T hurling many expletives at both the officer and his bodycam. Things get so heated that backup is soon called in, with a sergeant thankfully managing to eventually deescalate the situation.

The officer ultimately wrote Ice-T four tickets for driving with a suspended license, improper display, no inspection sticker, and missing front plates.

“Just next time show some respect,” the officer said afterwards.

“I don’t have to,” the defiant Ice-T said in response.

It seems that despite playing a cop on TV for a quarter of a century, Ice-T hasn’t learned much about how to treat police officers in real life. In the end, we’re just thankful that this exchange was deescalated before someone got hurt!
