King Charles has been battling an unspecified form of cancer for over a year. On Friday, Charles offered the public a rare emotional update about his cancer battle.

Charles’ Emotional Message

Ahead of Channel 4’s Stand Up To Cancer broadcast, Charles spoke out in a pre-recorded message. In it, the king talked about his “overwhelming” cancer diagnosis. Thankfully, the update was a positive one.

“Today I am able to share with you the good news that thanks to early diagnosis, effective intervention and adherence to ‘doctors’ orders,’ my own schedule of cancer treatment can be reduced in the New Year,” said Charles, 77.

“This milestone is both a personal blessing and a testimony to the remarkable advances that have been made in cancer care in recent years,” the king continued. “Testimony that I hope may give encouragement to the fifty percent of us who will be diagnosed with the illness at some point in our lives.”

Buckingham Palace has since confirmed the King’s condition. However, the palace seemingly made a point of avoiding the word “remission.”

“His Majesty has responded exceptionally well to treatment. And his doctors advise that ongoing measures will now move into a precautionary phase,” a palace spokesperson said. “This position will be continuously monitored and reviewed to protect and prioritize his continued recovery.”

“The advice from cancer experts is that, in his determination to support the whole cancer community, it is preferable that His Majesty does not address his own specific condition but rather speaks to those affected by all forms of the disease,” the spokesperson added.

Charles Doubles Down

In his own video message, Charles later admitted, “I know from my own experience that a cancer diagnosis can feel overwhelming.”

“Early diagnosis quite simply saves lives,” he explained.

Charles then went on to say that a statistic that “troubles [him] deeply” is that nine million people in the U.K. are currently not up to date with their recommended screenings. This represents “nine million opportunities for early diagnosis being missed.”

“I know, too, what a difference it has made in my own case. Enabling me to continue leading a full and active life, even while undergoing treatment,” he stated.

“Compassion must be paired with action,” the king concluded. “Your life — or the life of someone you love — may depend upon it.”

Charles’ Cancer Diagnosis

It was previously announced in February of 2024 that Charles had been diagnosed with cancer. The exact type of cancer has never been revealed.

“During The King’s recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted. Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer,” Buckingham Palace said at the time. “His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties.”

“The King is grateful to his medical team for their swift intervention. [This] was made possible thanks to his recent hospital procedure,” the palace spokesperson then added. “He remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible. His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation. And in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer.”

While we’re saddened that Charles’ cancer doesn’t seem to be in remission, we’re also glad that he’s gotten some good news about it. Please join us in saying a prayer for King Charles as his cancer battle continues!
