The Hollywood star Kevin Costner shocked everyone this week by taking a surprising jab at Yellowstone. This came one year after Costner left the hit series amidst rumors that he was feuding with creator Taylor Sheridan.

Costner Takes Shot At Yellowstone

Costner had played patriarch John Dutton since Yellowstone premiered in 2018. However, he didn’t return to finish out the second half of the fifth and final season last year. In a new interview with Entertainment Tonight, Costner quipped that the Yellowstone characters “all should be in prison.”

“Well it’s modern day ranching,” said Costner, 70. “Yellowstone was able to capture that really so beautifully. I mean, it’s a bit of a soap opera.”

“I mean, we all should be in prison,” he added, seemingly taking a jibe at all of the murders and lawlessness on the beloved show.

Calling Yellowstone a “soap opera” has also been interpreted as a jab. Indeed, Sheridan and fans alike see Yellowstone as a show that is far deeper than a “soap opera” ever could be.

Costner’s Yellowstone Exit

Costner didn’t return to film the second half of the fifth and final Yellowstone season because it conflicted with the filming of his four-part Western epic movie series Horizon. In the premiere of part two of season five, Costner’s character John was killed off in a murder-for-hire plot. Many fans saw this as a final dig at Costner from Sheridan, who was livid that he didn’t return to close out the show.

Before the show’s finale last year, Costner told Daily Mail, “I’m not thinking about [the Yellowstone finale], I don’t think I’ve given it any thoughts, we’ll just let it go.”

Costner had previously said that when Sheridan pitched Yellowstone to him, he made it sound his character was only going to be around for one season.

“When it was first pitched to me by Taylor [Sheridan] it was one season and [like] a long movie, which [is] speaking my language… but ultimately, I think what happened was the studio didn’t want that,” Costner said in June of last year. “And because he’s such a prolific writer, he said, ‘I can do that. I can make a series that goes on.'”

Costner then “stepped up” and agreed to “do it for three seasons, and I ended up doing it for five.”

Perhaps this was the source of the tension between Costner and Sheridan.

Sheridan Weighs In

As for Sheridan himself, he’s only briefly addressed his alleged feud with Costner.

“My last conversation with Kevin was that he had this passion project he wanted to direct,” Sheridan told The Hollywood Reporter in June of 2023. This was a reference to Horizon.

“Once lawyers get involved, then people don’t get to talk to each other and start saying things that aren’t true and attempt to shift blame based on how the press or public seem to be reacting,” Sheridan added. “His movie seems to be a great priority to him and he wants to shift focus.”

Yellowstone is one of the most popular shows in recent years. While it remains to be sad that Costner appears to look back at the show so negatively, we’re still glad that he took part in it. In the end, Yellowstone was never the same once Costner left!
