The A-List Hollywood star Kevin Costner, 69, has a new movie in the works. He is set to star in, co-write, and produce the upcoming surf thriller film Headhunters.

The project comes smack in the middle of Costner’s four-part magnum opus, Horizon: An American Saga.

Costner’s New Movie

Costner will be working on this project with co-writer and director Steven Holleran and producer Scott Steindorff. The Hollywood Reporter described the movie as being “a mashup that combines the ‘kinetic energy of surf culture with the suspense of horror.”

Costner’s character is Lazer, a washed-up American expat who comes from a very mysterious past. After winding up living in Bali, Indonesia, Lazer sets out on a mission to recruit a group of surfers and take them to an uncharted island. Their goal is to find the “perfect wave.” Once on the island, the unsuspecting team is forced to contend with an ancient tribe of headhunters who guard the land.

“What ensues is an adventure turned survival story of epic and bloody proportions on a tropical island which once seemed to be paradise … but is actually closer to hell,” reads the movie’s synopsis.

Headhunters is currently in pre-production in Hawaii, with filming set to start there next month.

Steindorff Sounds Off

“For decades, my friend Kevin and I have been searching for the right project to collaborate on,” Steindorff said in a statement. “This is one of the best scripts I have seen in my career. Kevin is a legendary actor who brings so much depth and charisma to his roles.”

Steindoff added that Costner “has written an iconic horror script with Steve.”

Steindorff has previously worked with Holleran, a renowned cinematographer, on projects like Netflix’s Firechasers and the upcoming documentary In Search of Love. This movie will be Holleran’s directorial debut.

“Steve has a keen eye,” Steindorff said of Holleran. “He pitched me this idea which was so unique and original. Working with him in the past has been nothing short of amazing, so I’m really looking forward to shooting Headhunters this fall.”

Meanwhile, Holleran spoke out to say that it was “an honor and dream come true” to write the movie with Costner.

Sources say that studios and streamers are currently vying for distribution rights and casting is underway. Aside from Costner, the only other casting decision that has been announced is Daniel Zovatto. The scene-stealer is best known for his work in movies like Station Eleven, The Pope’s Exorcist and Penny Dreadful: City of Angels.

Costner’s Horizon Movies

Costner has spent much of the past few years working on his four-part western epic Horizon. When the first Horizon movie premiered back in June, however, it was both a critical and financial flop.

“It didn’t have overwhelming success,” Costner specifically admitted to Variety of the first film. “I’ve had a lot of movies that way, that have stood the test of time.”

Perhaps that’s why Costner has decided to try his luck with Headhunters. We can’t wait to see it when it comes out!
