The last episodes of the fifth and final season of Yellowstone began airing last week. After Kevin Costner didn’t to return to film the final episodes, the show killed off his character John Dutton by suicide within the first few minutes.

Now, Costner is speaking out to address the fan backlash over his character’s death.

Costner Sounds Off

While fans have been outraged over the way Dutton was killed off Yellowstone, Costner doesn’t seem to mind.

“Fans have a voice in things,” Costner, 69, told E! News at the 2024 Governors Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday, “and they choose to follow stuff.”

Costner went on to say that he had pitched his character’s death to Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan “a while back.” However, it was fully up to the producers how Dutton would ultimately meet his fate.

“They do what they want to do,” Costner concluded. “That’s fine with me.”

Costner ‘Didn’t Know’ Final Yellowstone Episodes Were Airing

The day after Dutton was killed off Yellowstone, Costner spoke out to claim that he wasn’t even aware that the episode was airing.

“Well, I’m going to be perfectly honest. I didn’t know it was actually airing last night,” Costner said while appearing on The Michael Smerconish Program last Monday. “That’s a swear to God moment. I swear to God. I mean, I’ve been seeing ads with my face all over the place and I’m thinking, ‘Gee, I’m not in that one.'”

“I’m not in this season. But I didn’t realize yesterday was the thing. Somebody said, ‘It played last night?’ And I said, ‘Hmm, okay.’ So no, I found out about it this morning actually,” he continued. “I didn’t see it. I heard it’s a suicide, so that doesn’t make me want to rush to go see it.”

Costner went on to seemingly address Sheridan and the other people behind the scenes on the show.

“I heard what it was, but no, they’re smart people,” Costner said. “Whatever they’re doing, they’ll figure it out. But yeah, I had come up with two possible endings back when it wasn’t going to go as long as it did go.”

“They’re pretty smart people. Maybe it’s a red herring, he added of the suicide. “They’re very good. They’ll figure that out.”

Costner Leaves Yellowstone

Costner had announced back in June that he was “not going to be able to continue” filming Yellowstone due to scheduling conflicts with his four-part movie western epic Horizon: An American Saga.

“It was something that really changed me,” Costner said at the time. “I love the relationship we’ve been able to develop and I’ll see you at the movies.”

The first Horizon movie came out back in June. In his latest interview yesterday, Costner was asked when fans can expect Horizon Part 2 to be released.

“I’m gonna try to figure that out,” he said with a laugh. “I make these things, I will figure out how to get it to an audience.”

The next episode of Yellowstone airs on Sunday night at 8pm on Paramount. It will certainly be interesting to see how this incredible show comes to an end!
