The Hollywood legend Kevin Costner celebrated his 70th birthday last weekend. To mark the occasion, he spoke out to pay a touching tribute to the late great singer Whitney Houston, whom he became close to during his career.
Costner Honors Houston As He Turns 70
On Saturday, Costner took to his Instagram Story to share a photo of himself with Houston on the set of their classic 1992 movie The Bodyguard.
“This photo reminds me of how lucky I am to be getting another birthday,” Costner wrote in the caption. “We lost such a light when we lost Whitney.”
Houston sadly died in 2012 at the age of 48.
Costner also celebrated his landmark birthday by posting an old photo of himself as a child. In it, the future Dances With Wolves and Yellowstone star could fittingly be seen wearing cowboy attire.
“Thank you guys for the birthday wishes,” Costner wrote in the caption.
“If you can believe it, this is me,” he continued. “I was chasing the cowboy life just about as soon as I could walk, and here I am doing it still. Here’s to another year of keeping our sights set on our dreams.”
Costner’s Previous Tributes To Houston
This is far from the first time that Costner has honored Houston over the years. While walking the red carpet for the Screen Actors Guild Awards in 2022, Costner touched on the fact that the ceremony was happening close to the tenth anniversary of Houston’s death.
“When movies are working at their very best, they’re about moments and images that you’ll never ever forget,” Costner told People Magazine.
Costner went on to talk about Houston’s iconic rendition of Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You,” which she sang in The Bodyguard.
“I don’t think we’ll ever forget when that little song came out, that she just blew up,” he said. “She sang the first part of it a cappella and musically the world was never the same. We have a moment of her in that movie we’ll never ever forget that and I think that when movies are working at their best, that’s what can happen.”
Costner’s Eulogy For Houston
Last year, Costner recalled the 17-minute eulogy that he gave at Houston’s funeral at New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, New Jersey after her 2012 death.
“I remember being in the pews, and I had never been in a church that was more electric,” he remembered. “Two bands were playing … I thought this place was on fire.”
Costner was told at one point to keep his eulogy short because CNN was airing the funeral. He wasn’t having any of that, however.
“I said, ‘I’m sorry, I didn’t realize CNN was here, but they can take a commercial break,'” Costner recounted. “‘I’m going to say what I want to say. I came a long way to talk about this little girl.'”
