We previously reported that the pop star Katy Perry was facing major backlash for suing a “dying” 85 year-old veteran for his $15 million mansion. Now, Perry is demanding nearly $5 million in damages from this veteran.
Perry’s Legal Battle With Veteran
In court documents obtained by People Magazine, Perry is calling for Carl Westcott to pay a total of $4,718,698.95 in legal damages. The court documents state that Perry, 41, is “entitled to $3,525,000 in rental value” that she has claimed was lost due to the dispute. They added that she’s also entitled to “$1,343,401.95 for necessary repairs for a total of $4,868,401.95.”
The documents go on to say that with $149,703 being offset due to Westcott’s losses, the total award should be reduced to $4,718,698.95.
Westcott has since fired back by claiming that Perry owes him the remaining $6 million of the $15 million sale price of the mansion. At the time of this writing, she has only paid $9 million of that. The veteran’s lawyers state that this number should be brought down to $5,740,418.18 to compensate for the cost of repairs.
Perry’s History With Westcott
Perry has been embroiled in a legal battle with Westcott for many years. It all started in 2020. It was then that the elderly veteran sold her his $15 million mansion in 2020 via her business manager Bernie Gudvi.
Westcott, who suffers from the neurological disorder Huntington’s disease, changed his mind days later. Indeed, he tried to back out of this deal. He claimed that he hadn’t been in his right mind when he made the deal. Westcott alleged that he had been under the influence of pain medication following a recent surgery.
Perry, however, refused to let Westcott out of the deal. In December of 2023, a judge ruled in Perry’s favor. Indeed, the judge declared her to be the rightful owner of the mansion in Santa Barbara, California.
When testifying against Westcott in court over the summer, Perry was asked by the judge what she had to gain from litigation.
“Justice,” Perry simply replied. “I stand to lose money if it does not work in my favor.”
Westcott’s Family Hits Back
After Perry’s testimony, Westcott’s family spoke out to blast her.
“It was good for her to have the Wicked Witch finally come out of the West,” Westcott’s son Chart told The New York Post.
Chart went on to claim that Perry has shown “a pattern of disrespect” for years throughout this legal battle.
“Then she appears in pajamas before the judge. So, you know, just disrespectful,” Chart lamented. “I think [it’s] reflective of how she views everyone in the world. They are all, you know, less than her. They’re all not important to her. We’re all just her little playthings to do what she wants.”
When asked if he would talk to Katy personally if given the chance, Chart had a powerful response.
“If I could address Katy Perry or Katheryn Hudson [her real name], the human being, I might be interested in talking to that person. But I don’t think that person is there anymore,” Chart stated.
“It has been replaced by whatever Hollywood has done to her soul. And so all that is left is the shadow of someone who used to be a young girl and a child with a dream,” he concluded. “To go to Hollywood, and it’s chewed her up and spit her out. And what’s left is on display for the entire world to see. So, no, I don’t want to talk to her.”
While we’re sure that Perry has her reasons, it certainly seems unfair to be going after a dying veteran in this manner. Only time will tell how this turns out for Perry!
