The Oscar-winning Hollywood star Kathy Bates of Misery and Titanic fame is opening up about losing 100 pounds in recent years after she found that her stamina and mobility was being negatively impacted by her weight.

Bates Reveals 100 Pound Weight Loss

Bates, 76, is currently starring as as Madeline “Matty” Matlock in the CBS reboot of Matlock. While promoting the reboot, Bates discussed the demanding schedule of filming a show that is on broadcast television.

“It’s helped me tremendously that, over the last six or seven years, I’ve lost 100 pounds,” she told Variety. “I don’t think I’ve been this slim since I was in college.”

Bates said she hit her heaviest weight back in 2011. At the time, she was starring in the lead role of lawyer Harriet “Harry” Korn in the NBC legal comedy drama series Harry’s Law, which ran for two seasons.

“I had to sit down every moment that I could,” Bates admitted. “It was hard for me to walk. I’m ashamed I let myself get so out of shape, but now I have a tremendous amount of energy.”

Now that she’s feeling great physically, Bates is hoping to continue doing Matlock for “several years.”

“I can’t believe I’m saying that about doing episodic TV, but this has been so much of a challenge and a delight,” she gushed. “Matty is certainly my magic carpet right now, and I want her to go sailing on for quite a long time.”

Bates’ Previous Weight Loss Comments

Bates previously opened up her weight loss in a 2019 interview. At the time, Bates explained that she had lost 60 pounds in the hopes of avoiding diabetes.

“This is the best health I’ve been in in years, and I’m so grateful. It’s a miracle,” she told Extra at the time. “I was facing diabetes — it runs in my family — and I really didn’t want to live with that.”

Bates then said that she’d gotten some great dieting advice from her niece.

“After you eat for 20-30 minutes, you experience an involuntary sigh,” she explained. “It’s communication between stomach and brain telling you you had enough. … And what I discovered is if you listen to that sigh and push that plate away for just five minutes, you realize you’re satisfied, and you don’t have to eat more.”

That same year, Bates told People Magazine that her weight loss had helped relieve symptoms of lymphedema. This is a condition involves swelling that occurs in the arms and legs due to a blockage in the lymphatic system. Bates developed lymphedema after battling cancer.

“I’m feeling great,” she stated. “I’ve lost a lot of weight, and it’s really helped with my symptoms. I just still have to wear compression sleeves or guard against nicks and bug bites because that can lead to sepsis.”
