The Oscar-winning Hollywood star Jon Voight is on a mission to save Hollywood from ruin. After decades of working in the industry, he wants to ensure that Hollywood doesn’t go “down the drain like Detroit.”

Voight’s Fight To Save Hollywood

“It’s come to a point where we really do need help, and thank God the president cares about Hollywood and movies,” Voight, 86, told Variety. “He has a great love for Hollywood in that way. We’ve got to roll up our sleeves here. We can’t let it go down the drain like Detroit.”

This was a reference to President Donald Trump, who has appointed Voight as a special ambassador for Hollywood. At the time, the president referred to Hollywood as a “great but very troubled place.”

Voight went on to say that his goal is to “give people back their dignity and their jobs.”

“Something has to be done, and it’s way past time,” he added.

“We’ve gotten a lot of good response from people,” Voight continued. “We’re really rolling up our sleeves and working. I think we have a good plan, and we’re just beginning. This little team of mine has worked very hard to try to figure out things. The union people and producers give their expertise and understanding to this problem, and we’re working together. A lot of people had a lot of input and we’re listening to everybody.”

Voight Calls Out Hollywood Studios

Voight then explained that studios have been taking advantage of financial incentives to shoot abroad.

“Every studio has a lot of smart people, and they have maneuvered the write-offs and the gifts that are being given out throughout the world to lure people to different countries,” he stated. “They take advantage of them. Now we’re saying, ‘Hey, we have to have that here.’ Let’s have the level playing field. But really, we need more than that. We need to be competitive.”

In the end, Voight firmly believes that this isn’t about politics.

“In all of the interactions we’ve had [on addressing runaway production], politics has never come up. Never,” he emphasized.

“This shouldn’t be political,” Voight concluded. “I don’t know the political identities of the people we’ve talked to. We’ve talked to a lot of people here. I don’t distinguish them on their party affiliation. And If we can come up with [a plan that can be executed], he’ll back us. He wants us to be the Hollywood of old. If we all come together, I believe we have a bright future.”

Voight’s Strong Christian Faith

Voight has long been one of the only openly devout Christians in Hollywood. Indeed, unlike many stars, he’s never been afraid to speak out about his devotion to God.

“I’m always very attentive to every behavior I have and I’m always scared that I might offend God,” Voight said last year. “You know they say, ‘Fear of the Lord?’ That’s what I got. So you look at me and say, ‘He’s a guy who’s afraid of the Lord, I’ll tell you that.'”

“But it’s not an unpleasant–that fear is just respect, you know. I feel so badly if I’m not being properly respectful to the truth and to good and all of that,” he continued. “But I know that I would be forgiven because I’m making a tremendous effort,” he reiterates. “God looks down on me and says, ‘That’s a guy who’s trying.'”
